AMD chipset temps?

What does the SB950 temp usually idle at in normal ambient temps?

What about the 990FX?

I'm asking because I was thinking about going back to AMD if their chipsets don't run as hot as the Z77 does.

It's dependents on the motherboard, what I mean by is if your boards VRM heatsink is one with the 990FX chipset expect high temp. Temperature's can go up to 70C if you chose to go closed water loop on a Crosshair V Formula/-Z. You need very good air ventilation in you case to help decrease the 990FX temperature, and the best air cooling system. if you really want to go closed water loop, buy yourself high CFM fans ( you don't need delta's) ~80-90CFM for all case fans.
