I'm a graduate student in university and in need of a new laptop. My 2010 macbook pro just completely died on me.

I'll mainly be running ArcGIS and the statistical software JMP Pro (http://www.jmp.com/en_us/software/jmp-pro.html)

AMD's Carrizo seems promising but I'm having trouble finding 'decent' laptops in the US without very strange RAM or screen configurations (1366 x 768 or 4GB +2GB configurations). They all have slow 5200 rpm 1TB hard drives. My budget is $550.

The two I've found so far are (Both are Carrizo-L A8-7410M):

The Toshiba has a better screen resolution. I'd also like to replace the shitty 1TB stock hard drive with a 250gb 850 EVO from Samsung. Should that be possible, in theory?

Does anyone know of any 8700p/8800p laptops available in the US? I should mention that I'll never buy another HP product again.

These might be "carrizo" based laptops, but not really powerful ones and there is no reason buying the for $500

The HP Envy 15Z currently has a 8700/8800P APU, but it is badly limited (see). I'd suggest waiting for more serious offers, maybe from Acer

is there a reason you're looking at carrizo?

list of 1080p laptops under $550

Shouldn't be hard to replace the stock HDD with an SSD
a few SSD manufacturers list several SSDs with guaranteed compatibility (with that Toshiba), the main thing to make sure of is that the SSD is 7mm/the right size.

I'd really like to support AMD, being the underdog and all. I just found this model but I can't buy it in Hawai'i! :(

If I can't find something like that in the next few days I'll buy an intel. Not militant about it.

You won't find a real good one... even the one you posted comes with no higher resolution than 1366x768, apart from that it isn't available anyway...

You might as well get the HP Envy, if you're content with that resolution, it at least offers some customizability
