Hi, I just bought a Toshiba netbook with the AMD C-30 and it does not seem to want to load the Windows 7 64-bit version. It is only recognizing the 32-bit version....so what gives??

I thought the AMD C-30 was a 64 bit CPU!!

What is happening here?

Thank you,

CG

It is definitely a 64-bit CPU. All new CPUs being made today are 64-bit compatible.

If it's a netbook, may want to run the 32-bit version anyway. I think there's a *slight* performance advantage to running 32-bit, I know at least it uses a tiny bit less ram, and for a netbook, you're gonna want every shred of performance you can manage. Even if you got a 2x2gb ram kit for it, running 32-bit will leave you with ~3.5gb or so of ram, more than enough.

I always install 64-bit, but I do draw the line at netbooks, at least with the current crop of ultra-weak CPUs. The only good netbook CPU I've ever seen are those ULV C2Ds/Pentium DCs, and they aren't great, but are far better than suffering with a C30 or Atom.

I've got Win7 and Ubuntu 11.04 running on my C50 toshiba (NB550D), both are 64bit. The cpu should definitely be 64bit compatible.

Do you have the 64bit install disk? Which version of windows are you trying to instal?

some of the Atoms are 32-bit
I thought that was only true for the old first gen atoms?

The only advantage of using 32bit instead of 64 is that you need a bit less memory (pointers are smaller) and that the cache is used better. Doesn't matter much either way.

Actually the environment that applications run in is the same. On a 64bit OS, a 32bit program still gets a 32bit environment with 32bit pointers and stack. In fact because many of the OS memory mappings are moved out of the 32bit space, more memory is available to a 32bit program on a 64bit OS. Back when drivers were young there may have been a slight hit for the 64bit OS but those days are long gone.
