About 40% faster than 60% of current chips at 30% of applications, 39.6% of the time, with a clock 90% as high as the competition. Priced about 50% acceptable.

Are you stupid?

Nothing, just baffled by how someone can seemingly be so ignorant, specifically after the previous posts in this thread...

The there's no point in insulting him, especially when you are new to a forum and haven't really built up a rapport with anyone yet.

There's actually only a little bit of information in this thread, although there is a link to more.

Can you answer his question?

I didn't insult him. I asked him whether he was stupid or not, there's a difference. If he had answered that with "no" then I'd be surprised why he would ask a question like he did.

Newsflash: I don't care about my reputation on Internet forums. That's where you and me differ I guess. I come here to provide some information, help some people out, and give my thoughts on idiotic posts. Pure and simple.

Now if you don't mind, stop derailing the thread.

It has nothing to do with "reputation", other than in terms of being helpful and informative, or facilitating the discussion. You've not done any of these things.

You are the one who actually derailed the thread. But since you want us to get back on topic, OK. What's your contribution to the topic, "AMD Bulldozer going AVX"?

I think the inclusion of AVX can only be beneficial for the chip, however, I'm burning to know how high the royalties are that Intel is getting for this.

In any case the Bulldozer chip archi is a promising one, and curiously the only one I'm even looking forward to. But last I heard it's projected to launch in 2010 or 2011.

@Gazelle: Please stop distracting from the point of this thread with every post you make.

AVX will give performance gains approaching 100% in a CPU-limited parallelisable FP-heavy application such as media encoding/transcoding, or applying photoshop filters. For branchy code like raytracing, probably more like 30-50% improvement, and that's assuming you're using double-precision maths. For games it'd be useful for physics and some AI code, but I would be surprised if it translated into more than a 20% FPS boost even if the game is CPU limited.

Hey Starglider what is your estimations for the more scientific HPC stuff, like 416.gamess type calcs?

jandle you need to spend more time around here passively observing the quality and character of some posters before making rude/inflammatory remarks like this.

Sometimes when a person is asking a question which to you may seem like a stupid question it is actually only a stupid question to you because of your own ignorance of something far greater to which the questioner is alluding to.

And you may find credibility and reputation to be of something of little value when you have none to lose, but surely you recognize that without a positive reputation and rapport with the forum environment with which you wish to engage, your posts are going to have all the less impact and resultant value-add as your readership will consider you less of a credible source and more of an irritation/annoyance they could live without.

I've seen hundreds of posters come in here just like you, so full of promise and potential to become real assets to these forums only to blaze out in a matter of weeks to months over some ego-based growing pains. Don't blaze out, do the prudent thing and every time you go to click that "Reply to Topic" button after drafting your clever and witty retort just stop for two seconds and ask yourself "who cares about this post I just wrote?" and think about the people who are going to have to read it and cringe in embarrassment for you should you decide to post it and proceed to basically shit all over yourself (your reputation).

There are dozens of posters like that here already, we don't need more of them. If you want to be like that just realize it is a self-defeating prospect. No one will take your posts seriously once you build that kind of reputation for yourself. If you don't believe me just lurk in the Video forums for a few days and see how well received some of the high postcount posters are over there who just can't stop filling their depends undergarments.

i think he was just fakeposting. and after reading your big brother style advice-giving crap i'm not sure if you're fakeposting either. after all, your handle is "idontcare," so do you, or don't you? all i know is that this thread is not about SSE or AVX. It's about fakeposting and whining by those who don't get it. you can't apologize to them, and why would you? they don't get it.

And even if he weren't fakeposting, we're three years away from these architectures and the truth is that we don't know how much faster what is going to be that far from now. All we can say is that it'll be faster than things are today.

Look thru IDC's posts. He has a proven track record of useful posts and a nature that is both logical and disarming. There's no point in impugning him.

I agree that it's hard to predict the all-around impact of AVX. However, it nice to see a potential performance increase realized beyond what's obtained thru clockspeed and cores.

his posts are always full of facts, i'll give you that. but did you actually read this time? it was one of those "let me tell you how we do things around here" type of posts. could've been fake is all i'm saying. why would jandlecack jump down someones throat for asking a dumb question? could've been fake. all i'm saying.

Well, my own opinion is that IDC was trying to be helpful, but he certainly doesn't need me to defend him. Jandlecack might have something interesting to contribute, and since we are all seeking knowledge...

I have to admit, I'm not even sure what "fakeposting" is... is that a form of "trolling"? Have I been suckered?

it's when you say something blatantly uncalled for, or awkward for the purposes of disrupting a thread and making people go "what was his problem?" which is exactly what happened. this is such a textbook case i just don't see what the big deal is with everyone. some of us have been on the internet for 15+ years and are surprised by little. i am surprised that you are surprised, but that's all.

if i were to fakepost about AVX it would be like

"is this going to make my hentai download faster? god i love the way name1 verbs the noun out of name2! it's so hentailicious!!!"

1. hentai is weird and people who like it are weird.
2. super-wide CPU instructions have nothing to do with bandwidth in TCP networks yet my obsession with japanese cartoon sex hopes that it may
3. off topic.
4. sexually deviant.

..but every eyebrow is angled high. there are other kinds of fakeposts and other kinds of fakeposters. idontcare's big brother stuff could've been a little more homoerotic because it was lacking in comedy. but some fakers enjoy being difficult to tell. if a fake is obvious then it isn't funny either. but it has to be a little weird.

OK, thanks for the explanation!

I've been Internet-connected for about 15 years, but I don't hang out in forums much, besides this one. I also have a tendency to accept posts at face value.
