amd budget build

Everybody here seems to telling me that an amd system is better than an intel in both performance and price. I know nothing about amd because i haven't been much of an amd fan. My last three systems have all been intel's so i have no experience with amd. I might be interested in getting an amd system later this summer. I was prepared to build a intel system with these parts:

Asus P4C800-E motherboard (875 Chipset)
Intel 2.8C Pentium 4 Processor
Corsair PC3200 XMS Series 256Mb memory
Nvidia/Ati new video card
Antec Lanboy Case

Someone put together a amd system with those similar specs in regards to processor, motherboard, etc.

You would be making a mistake by buying that system, you could get this AMD system for less and probably perform just as well if not better:

Motherboard: ABIT NF7-S
CPU: Mobile Athlon XP (XP-M) 2400+ Overclocks to 2800+ speeds with ease
RAM: OCZ 3200 2x256 mbs of RAM will cost about the same and give a better boost in performance
Video Card: Radeon 9800 PRO 256 bit

I don't know what exactly your using this system for but if its for gaming, this is the route u should go.

EDIT: as for where to buy these parts, look no further than http://www.newegg.com. Completely reliable at excellent prices.

I say get this. the prices should be very similar to the intel, but is a faster system overall. i dont know what video card u want since i dont even know your budget or primary use of the computer.

Chaintech nF3 motherboard $95
AMD Athlon 64 2800+ Processor $187
Mushkin 512mb DDR PC-3200 ram $87
Nvidia/Ati new video card
Antec Lanboy Case

Here's what I just built for my uncle about 3 weeks ago:

Antec Solution Series Beige SLK1600 w/300 watt psu
Lite-On 52X CD-ROM
2 Enermax Adjustable 80mm fans UC-8FAB-B (I HIGHLY recommend those)
Thermaltake TR2TT HSF (adjustable)
Sony 3.5" floppy
WD400JB 7200 RPM 8MB cache hard drive
Asus A7N8X-X mobo
AthlonXP 2000+
Sapphire Radeon 9200SE (Do NOT use the included catalyst drivers, go for newer version)
2 sticks 256MB Kingston ValueRAM PC3200

It's rock solid (so far) and is as silent as a brand new Dell (I outdid myself this time)

Sorry, I didn't save any benchmarks to show & tell, but I'll say, it's absolutely NO DOG.

Grand total was about $480 including delivery.

Hope that helps you. It turned out to be a spitting image of what Anandtech recommended in the last budget guide.

This seems a little high for a "budget" case, but maybe I'm just poor. First thing that stands out is the low amount of ram. Dropping back just a bit in the processor and maybe motherboard and you're looking at more ram and better performance.

For CPU I like the AMD Barton 2800+($113). Decent performance compared to the P4 2.8($169) but over $50 cheaper. For motherboard three options stand out. Abit NF7-S($85), Asus A7N8X-X($70), or Shuttle AN35N-U($55). Again the more money saved here, the more/better RAM and Vid Card on your budget. Compared to the Asus P4C800-E($178) you're saving boatloads. If you plan on RAID the Abit board can handle it, but the AN35N-U is THE best price/performance ratio motherboard. Take the cash you saved and buy a pair of dual channeled sticks, or grab some kingston on sale for a gig or so of valueram.

I think any budget PC built today should exploit the middle market of AMD CPU's and motherboards. With the high price of RAM and a new Video Card cutting down on the other parts is very efficient.

BTW, I happen to be running the shuttle board with a 2600+($79 it cost me) for a solid CPU/Mobo combo less than $140.
