Im running a 2500+ barton and the damn thing runs at 58-60c during full loads. I'm not even OC'ing which bothers me more. I know its not my case because I ran the CPU plenty of times with the case completely open and I got the same temps. I got the CPU with the "certified" HSF. Since this is a stock HSF I was not expecting ambient temps but 55c-60c? When summer arrives I can bet this thing will be running well over 60c during full load.

My only guess is that I need a better heat sink and fan. I looked at most of the SLK's but the amount of parts it takes to install some of those copper suckers makes me frown. I just need a plain HSF with a standard power cable and a somewhat normal sized heatsink that will keep my Barton in the 40c range idle and 50c full load. Just as long the noise is not over 40 dec i'll be happy.

The SLK-800 is about as easy install as it comes. It has the standard cleats that lock onto the CPU socket tabs...that's it. Then the fan install is easier (if that is possible) as all you do is connect the retention wires to the Heatsink and snap the fan in place then plug the fan into the MoBo. If this takes more than 3 minutes to do I would be shocked...

It is also about the best cooling solution you can buy.. Add a nice quiet 30-37cfm fan and you are ready to rock.

SK7 is great, u can buy it with low-noise fan and have perfomance almost in the lvel of the SLK800 (even better if u don't have good airflow in your case)

I use an SK-7 with an OLD 70mm 4500 RPM fan from a heatsink I bought for an Athlon 1.2 Ghz. My XP2500 overclocked to 2100 @ 1.75 volts runs 36 C idle and 41 C under 100% load. That's with case temp at 23 C

The retail heatsinks are designed to keep the processor just within specifications. They're not designed to be super coolers... AMD could care less if it's 65 degree C... the processor is good up to 85 they say. If you're gonna overclock, get something better... if you plan on running it at stock speeds, leave that on there... if it burns up (I VERY highly doubt it will), you have a 3 year warranty and you've complied with all the rules about using an approved heatsink and fan and will get a free replacement.

I own the Barton 2500 and after playing BF1942 for hours with tons of action I rebooted and checked temps and its always at 40C?

I have a different thermal pad, because I had to change motherboards, but stock hs and fan

23c case temp? Wow. What does it take to get it that cool? When my case temp is around 38c my cpu temp drops to around 48c-49c like it should (10c difference) . However my case fan is always a little above room temp, so when its 40c room temp the case temp is 45c.

Im thinking about getting the Alpha PAL8045U. I heard from some that its a bit on the loud side, but its simple, and keeps cpu's very cool. Its just somewhat expensive for a HSF. Almost the cost of a 1800+.

what motherboard are you using?

also... yeah, i'd get better cooling than just the stock hsf...

i would personally recommend the slk 800... it is a GREAT hs... and you can always get a quiet fan like the tt smart fan 2 or ys tech variable fan...

both have rheowhatever you call them to adjust the speeds to something that's bareable...

Living in michigan helps keep things cool =) Room temp was 23 C at the time, and my case temp is rarely higher than room temp... I have 2 80 mm fans in front, 2 80mm fans in back, an 80 mm slot fan below video card, and then the 2 in the power supply of course.
