AMD Barton 3000+ @ 1.5 V

My CPU was generating quite a bit of heat (~52-54 C idle) and I decided to lower the core voltage to 1.5 V istead of the default 1.65 V. Now it's 38 C idle and rock stable (7 hours of 3d benching). Any ideas why that is? Why is the default voltage higher than it actually needs to be?

Simply because these chips call for 1.65. One might need 1.65, and another might need 1.5 like yours. If it runs at 1.5 I'd keep it there, or think about seeing how high you can overclock it 🙂

Yes, the lucrative idea of overclocking has, on occasion, entered my mind. But, alas, until I find a better cooling alternative to Volcano 11 I will just keep it at stock speeds and lower voltages. Although I think I WILL try to go even lower without underclocking...

I don't think it could hurt, but then I killed my CPU last night, so what do I know - but keep lowering that voltage, and see how cool you can get it 😉

How in the name of all that is silicone do you get over 35K of posts?!?!?!?

A little calculation on my part:

Joined in Sep 2000 - that means (grind, grind...) somewhere around 12, maybe 13, hundred days - this comes to (click, click...) ~30 posts PER DAY.

Damn, that's what I call board activity. 😀

As mentioned, since it's running it's rated speed@1.5v you probably have a good overclocker there, so in the future should you want/need more performance you will most likely get 2.4ghz+ :beer: As far as those two ATOT post Ho's go, I'm just glad to see them posting in the real forums 😉

Bit of an update. I ran Prime95 and got hiccups at 1.5V. Raised it to 1.525V and now it's perfectly stable (no errors). So I guess I'm getting watercooling and overclocking that puppy at stock voltages (well, I HOPE I will).
