AMD AVC CPU HSF won't go over 3180 RPM

We have this AVC Z7U7414001 HSF, the heatpipe HSF AMD uses on the larger X2. Even at 55 degrees C, it spins at 3180 RPM. The Frosty Tech review says they shorted out the thermistor to run the fan at a max , I think around 5000 RPM. So, naturally I'm wondering shouldn't the fan on our rig be going over 3180 RPM when it gets into the 50s? I have looked in the bios, and have tried setting the fan to high when temps get above 35. Yeah, I know it will be noisy above 3000 RPM.

the air at the thrmistor has to get that hot... the hsf would be molten... i always short the thermistor and use speedfan... it's a noisy little booger spinning at 5k...
 
Hey Geezer from a fellow geezer,

The thermistor on the HSF's fan is adjusted by the AIR temp NOT CPU temp. The warmer the air coming thru the fan, the higher the speed, the cooler the air, the lower the fan speed. If you want it to run based on CPU temp, then you'll have to short the thermistor and let your mobo or other fan controller control it. I'm straining to hold back the "D" word...

But temps in the 50s are plenty safe for modern CPUs. When it consistently rises above 60, I'd start worrying - but only a little bit. Running cooler might help longevity though. The way it is now, the CPU temp is controlling the range within which the thermistor can adjust the speed (if you have the mobo's controller enabled). I have no idea what the base temp and range of resistance the thermistor is.

The motherboard's CPU fan controller will just try to keep the CPU at a safe temp (somewhere around 50 to 55). If you want cooler, you'll have to short the thermistor and control the fan manually.

Oh, I have another question...I'm working on another rig, it has the Toledo core 3800+ X2. Overclocked to 2.6 GHz right now. With the AMD heatpipe HSF, with the thermistor in place, it does not go above 3180 RPM no matter what. So, we were hitting 60 degrees C under dual Orthos load. That's about 5 degrees hotter than the last rig we built at the same speed. I shorted out the thirmistor, and now it's spinning at 6120 RPM. Temps fell to 54 degrees C. That's better, but will the fan last long at that speed? What do most guys do when stress testing? Do they turn the fan up to full blast?

The fan is rated at it's full speed. I have no idea how they rate the MTBF on that fan. Dropped down to 3100 it should last a lot longer.

6000 revs - holy crap! my little 70mm fan can run at 3500 or so and I have it cranked down to 2k - cools my Duron1600 just fine. Only getting 55 out of a screaming meemie fan... I'd be looking at a replacement - perhaps the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro. Or remove the current HS goop and try something else. But if all you need is temporary extra cooling for stress testing, then letting it run full speed will do as long as it's not screaming at the normal working temp of 50 to 55 C.

I use the Arctic Cooling 64 on my personal Opteron 165 that is at 2.6GHz. It's nice.
Frosty tech rated the AVC Z7U7414001 HSF the best they had tested at that time, May 2006,spinning at 5400 RPM. 6 degrees better than the Arctic Cooling 64, but at a much higher RPM and noise too than the arctic 64 .
