Two years ago I had an Nvidia 6600GT and an AMD 3200+ single core. Scored a dismal 1008 in 3DMark 2006. Two years later- I did 11 times that. :)

Graphics Driver ATI Radeon HD 3870

DirectX Version 9.0c

System Memory 2048 MB

Disk Space 190.79 GB

Motherboard Manufacturer http://www.abit.com.tw/

Motherboard Model IP35-E (Intel P35+ICH9/R)

Operating System Microsoft Windows XP

SM 2.0 Score 5074 Marks

SM 3.0 Score 5650 Marks

CPU Score 2878 Marks

Detailed Test Results

Graphics Tests
1 - Return to Proxycon 39.323 FPS

2 - Firefly Forest 45.25 FPS

CPU Tests
CPU1 - Red Valley 0.912 FPS

CPU2 - Red Valley 1.454 FPS

HDR Tests

2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 61.357 FPS

I am able to overclock this Sapphire card to 860/2600 easily as soon as I set the fan to 60%. I cannot hear it over my case fans. 30% was just to slow however it does work for stock settings. 777/1126. 70C now 50C but overclocked.

What I really like is the card downclocks to 300/1126 when in 2D. temps are 28-30C when idle.

Gotta love this card. Newegg rocks and did not gouge me.

3DMark06 is rubbish.

It gives far too much weight in the CPU clock speeds in its final scores. I have an e6400 at stock and an 8800GT and scored around 9,000, but 3DMark would have us believe that an HD3870 do better in games than I would.

The truth is, the 3870 won't beat an 8800GT in most games, and until a game comes out where it'll squeeze the processor for what it's worth, 3DMark is only an egotistic guy's tool to brag about their own hardware.

@OP, did you have to alter 3dmark06 to get it to run on the 3870? I read somewhere the other day that you need to alter one of the files to get 3870 to run correctly, but I am currently having mem probs and get 3dmark06 (or anything else) to install correctly.

@Syntax Error - 3DMark06 is fine, as long as you compare the feature test FPS, not just the overall score.

As a comparison, my scores with BFG 8800GT, all stock 625/900.

BTW, I am impressed by the 3870 scores!

I would like to try out a 3870, compared to a 8800 GT, i think both cards are pretty close, i read a review where the guy says that he has both and likes the ATI better and says it has better picture quality, I have used ATI for years and never had a Nvidia card before I bought my 8800 GT, I replaced a ATI X850XT and the 8800 looks alot better than the ATI i replaced the colors a so much more vibrant on desktop and games.

bump.

I got 10316 on the rig in my sig. Well, the rig in my sig except e6750 at stock and 1gb ram instead of 2.
edit: 10377 now with the 2gb ram back in, so not much change. I'm going to try out the same settings as OP and see what I get.

3dmark score 10377
sm 2.0 4493
sm 3.0 5039
cpu 2397

tried on 860/2602 still at default on e6750 but failed on deep freeze. upped fan to 65% to see if it will finish now. also restored the 3.4ghz oc that I've been running for several months. let's see if it finishes... by the way, I think that everybody needs a setup like mine: ie, main gaming rig on a large table, file server at 3 oclock for use when running demos or main computer is otherwise occupied.

This is amazing, 3870 fan is barely audible at 65%. what a change from the old days. I think I'll probably set it around 55% for everyday use. failed 3dmark06 again, this time during cpu test. might need a little bit more vcore.

I forgot to mention, I'm a major dumbass. Please nobody quote me on that :) I forgot that my slot 3 ram stick has a slightly loose locking pin on the side nearest the gpu. That pin came completely off when I tried to reinstall the 2x1 gb ballistix. It now seems likely that I jarred it when installing the 3870, causing 3 days of consternation...

ok, I should probably go spend time with my mom, wife. SHIT! first, I need to get past deep freeze. Guess I'll have to lower clocks a bit since it failed at the same spot as it did at 50% fan speed... grrrr... I guess I'll try 860/2582...

ok, I did a little bit better this time: http://service.futuremark.com/...14&XLID=0&UID=12307097

3DMark Score 12065 3DMarks

SM 2.0 Score 5127 Marks

SM 3.0 Score 5623 Marks

CPU Score 3057 Marks

1 - Return to Proxycon 39.062 FPS

2 - Firefly Forest 46.382 FPS

CPU1 - Red Valley 0.965 FPS

CPU2 - Red Valley 1.55 FPS

1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) 51.429 FPS

2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 61.025 FPS

had to drop memory down to 2452...will try to do a bit better later. This is with the e6750 at 8x425. Still, over 12k isn't too shabby :)

btw: card idles at 28c with fan set on 53% :):):)

ok, ramped oc back up to 3.6 and have card at 860/2562 to get 12299. now on to crysis :)
