I have a bonus pci-e slot in my rig and a 9600 GT kicking around. Is there still a method i can use to get physx running. I remember it was possible using older nVidia drivers. What were they and who has them? =)

BTW, I'm on windows 7 so i can use 2 sets of drivers.

edit.. I'm actually using an 8800 GS 384meg card with 96 shaders

The restriction was strangely not present with the BETA version of 257.15. Nvidia subsequently released a WHQL version of the same driver which had the restriction in place again and it has remained with later releases.

Can I do this on with Vista 64-bit?

The better-half has a 9600GT and I still have my 4850 sitting around after I picked up my 5850, so I could swap the 9600GT out and try physX ;)

just wanted to chime back in here that the 257.17 drivers indeed work.

Physx is working great along with 5870's

I'm still having my AGEIA PCI card around (It worked fine with Batman AA with a hack, but I had too many slowdowns which I think that the culprit is the PCI BUS.) :(

I've tried Batman AA, using the Nvidia spoof trick with Radeon pro and an 8800GS @ 2560x1600 4xAA (in game AA). I run the benchmark with vsync on and get MAX MIN and Average FPS of 60 which is perfect.

Metro 2033 gets identical FPS with in +or- 1fps using advanced Physx on and off. Havent really looked to see if the effects are actually there though, lol

So Physx is working fine for you with two 5870's in CrossFire and a beta driver? That kind of makes Nvidia official position that they disabled it for technical reasons seem pretty suspect.

I haven't bothered with Physx in a while, it was pretty 'meh' to me when I saw it. Are better games coming out that will use it for anything exciting? I would certainly look for a lower end Nvidia card if it was starting to become worthwhile... GT240's aren't expensive. :)

I suppose it could be one of those situations where the question to ask is "how would you know if it wasn't working completely/properly/entirely?".

Sure it doesn't result in your rig crashing, no BSOD staring you in the face so you know stuff just didn't work out, but in the absence of it completely bombing out how would you know you were actually experiencing Physx in all its intended splendor and glory? :p

Well, I wouldn't know if I'm missing a particle or two I guess.

But, if it seems to do what it's supposed to do with Crossfired cards (which some people say that just getting CF working properly in the first place takes some luck!) and a beta driver I have to think leaving non-Nvidia cards plus a Physx card together as an unsupported, but not artificially blocked option would have been enough. It's obvious that having both cards together doesn't tear apart space-time fabric or cause a BSOD or anything. :)

Yeah if its no-harm no-foul then that is one thing, but if it is sold as being capable in those configs then there is liability (the class-action kind) should it be proven some day that there were a couple missing particles for some users with certain hardware combinations.

I know how I would have set it up, but Nvidia keeps losing my phone number and so they continue to operate at a deficit to my expertise :p ;) I take it they lost yours too from the sounds of it :)

I'll PM Keysplayr with my ideas, he'll get them to Jen-hsun (we're on a first name basis) and this should be taken care of by next Monday or so. ;)

Come on guys we all know it doesn't work by default because....Nvidia doesn't like to play second fiddle!

Second thought....Maybe nvidia could get rid of all the excess GTX 460's if they would market them as physX compatable with AMD cards. Probably overkill as physX card but at least they aren't too power hungry :)

Its actually about perfect for the job. Anything beyond a 9800 GT is kind of a waste.
that is not necessarily true. it really depends on what your main card is. if you have a gtx260 and you want to use a 9600gt for physx then yeah that makes sense. if you were using a gtx480 then a 9600gt could actually be only a little better or possibly even slower than having the 480 handle both. basically the stronger your main card is then the stronger the physx card needs to be to get the most out of it. with a gtx480 something like a gtx260 or gtx275 would be needed to fully push physx. heck Mafia 2 even recommends a gtx480 for graphics with a gtx285 for physx on the high physx settings.

That's something that I can't fully understand, once you remove the cloth folder from the game, you can run it at medium setting and is totally playable, could it be that the cloth simulation is too much for even a 9600GT?
