AMD Athlon64x2 4800+ vs AMD Athlon64 FX55

Im trying to put together a cool computer (for about 60/40 gaming/general use) and there are still some thing I have to work out.
The Newegg comparision:

The FX55 is cheaper(in the bundle deal with Newegg.com (1gb mem, motherboard, fx55) - and according to the AMD site is more aimed towards gaming, which is why I'm leaning towards it.
However, I was wondering if the 4800+ had more potential because of the dual core?
Well I'm an extreme noob, so I need some "expert" opinions..
so: price no big concern, which processor do you think would suit my needs better and would last me longer?

get the dual core. was in the news on anandtech the other dat that intel is pushing dual core optimizations for games (call of duty 2 and quake 4) and more games will follow. and looking at the Q4 tests you can definatly see the increase with dualcore.

dual core will also definatly last you much longer. so lasts longer, better for gaming (now and in the future), and multitasking will fell alot smoother. done deal i'd say.

The dual core will beat the FX 55 if overclocked, and will beast it when the dual core patches start coming out in force. But by the way, in my experience, all X2 dual cores clock the same, to about 2.65. Get a dual core Opteron.

Well aren't Opteron's "meant/good" for for OCing? I'm really un-experienced in computers, so worrying about like heat and cooling, etc would be hard. Also, I have a very limited money supply (as I don't currently have a job, using my savings lol) so if I were to like kill one of the processors a replacement might not come easy.

or you could wait for amd to release its fx-60...which is dual-core

Are you saying I should wait for the fx-60 to then go ahead and purchase that, or wait until the fx60 becuase the prices of the 4800/fx57 will go down?


Also, do you guys think that it would be better for me to "downgrade" the processor to like athlonx2 4200+ and then get a better graphics card?
The arrangement I was thinking of was something like
4800+ with 7800GT 256mb graphics card, but
I could go with like
4200+ with 7800GTX 512mb and a better harddrive?
I think those cost about the same on newegg.com

Once you go Dual CPU you don't want to go back.


On the 7800GT or 7800GTX 256MB or 7800GTX 512MB .... What monitor are you running? If it's an LCD what's it's native resolution?

I'm presonally of the opinion that a 7800GT is more then enough for people with 1280x1024 LCDs. If you are runnign something that's 1920x1200 though ... you may want to throw whatever you can at it.

I haven't picked out a monitor yet But I was leaning towards getting a CRT montior because they are usually a lot cheaper (especially for equivalent quality, IMO)

Does anyone know how big the actual difference is between the 7800GT and the 7800GTX or the 7800GTX256 and the 7800GTX512??

my fx55 x800xt 2 gigs ram, 90 to 120 fps bf2 online......

my 4400+ dual, 7800gtx, 2 gigs ram, 90 to 120 fps online,bf2 , no backround lag EVER.

my 3200, x800xt,1.5 gig ram, 60 to 90 fps, bf2 online.

half life 2 , the fx chip will run slighly faster, coding , online dual core all the way, this dual core can run a 16 bit game while encoding on 32 bit format , its just the most usefull pc lve ever built, GO DUAL CORE !

If you are going to be running a CRT... Then I really don't think the premium on a 7800GTX 512 is worth it. With a CRT you can run at whatever resolution you need to without sacraficing image quality.

Go with a 7800GT or 7800GTX 256.

Personally, I don't think the GTX is worth a $150 premium over the 7800GT.
