AMD Athlon64 3500+... way too hot??

I just recently bought an Athlon 64 3500+ AM2 processor (came with the stock fan). Within minutes (I'm talking maybe 5) of turning on the machine and going directly into BIOS (so the CPU is idle), my CPU temp approaches and eventually gets to 90 degrees Celsius!

Could this be bogus and the MoBo is reporting something false, or perhaps the CPU is faulty? I can't imagine this thing getting close to that hot even without a fan altogether. I'm not sure what I should do..

Which mobo do you have? Have you checked to see if other people are getting faulty readings? My 3500+ runs very cool with the stock HSF.
