AMD (athlon XP, duron) laptops... opinions?

I'm trying to help my girlfriend pick out a cheap laptop. Her budget is $1,200-ish. She wants frills and speed, which is hard to get at that price, which we all know. However, I have found some pretty good laptops at hpshopping.com, the ZE series. The issue is though, they run on AMD chips. I've never operated or even seen an AMD laptop, so I ask you this...

Has anyone had any good/bad experiences?
What about heat? Fan noise that cools that heat?
Any other quirks?
