I just put together one. XP 1600+, Abit KG7, 512 DDR RAM, SK6 cooler. The system is overclocked to 1607mhz which is 153x10.5 as I haven't unlocked it. CPU Temp.@ ideal with case closed 98DEG full load over night with prime highest 104DEG. Heat isn't a problem.

Actually, the XP produces less heat than the 1.4ghz T-birds like mine do. use a quality HS/F like the SK-6 or Alpha 8045, some Artic silver or other high quality thermal paste and proper case ventilation and you won't have any heat problems.

The Athlon heat problem was pretty well described in an article at Tom's Hardware. Athlon doesn't disipate any more heat than P4 but due to lack of internal thermal management it will self destruct without proper cooling. It can take the MB with it as it frys. (such as a fan failing, power connector coming loose, bad heat sink mount, etc).

On the otherhand, P4 automatically throttles down gracefully if it detects an overheat situation.
