I wanna get a heatsink and fan, and I want to know what is THE BEST regardless of price (except Water-Cooling) Heatsink/Fan, so that I can also O/C my processor safely. (heh, listen to me, i think O/Cing is safe...)

I will be O/Cing it with the FSB to 200mhz, so that it registers as a 3200+ processor.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

the best heatsinks for Athlon XP are Thermalright SLK-947, SP-97 with 92mm Tornado, Thermaltake Extreme Volcano 12 ( replace it with a 80mm Tornado), and Swiftech MCX462-V with 92mm Tornado.

but the best is SP-97 with 92mm Torando

Megaworks,

What if bigdan4712 would have also included the additional requirement that, "I'd also like it to be really quiet."

Would your recommendation be for:

1. Thermalright SLK-947, SP-97 with 92mm Tornado
2. Thermaltake Extreme Volcano 12 ( replace it with a 80mm Tornado), or
3. Swiftech MCX462-V with 92mm Tornado

Thanks!

well he said the best ok fine if you want a "quiet cooling" you have two options get a fan controller for the torando or get yourself the 92mm Panaflo MA1 30dba 48cfm happy now lewisfoshee.

I was just seeking the benefit of your insight, not flaming your contribution. I intended it as sincere question. Sorry you didn't interepret it that way.

If you want something really quiet, you can either undervolt an 80 or 92 mm fan on one of the Thermalright sinks, or you can get a Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCu and turn the fan down to five volts or something. I'm fairly sure it cools better than the Thermalrights at very low fan speeds.

the slk + a quiet 92mm fan. slk coolers are good for low rpm fans since the base doesn't block airflow.

a fan speed controller on a tornado doesn't do much, that fan is just insane noise.

Quiteness doesnt really matter to me, its all about performance!!

Ehh, I usually always have music playing and I have a car audio subwoofer hooked up to my computer, so I wouldnt hear it any. :p

definitely an SLK if you don't care about noise.
go with a 92MM fan that pushes the most CFpM that you can find.
I think the volcanos are the most powerful out there.

just an fyi.. if you're just doing that OC, you don't *necessarily* need the best hsf out there. my 2500+ is running @ 3200+ on the stock cooling, no problems. i would reccomend getting aftermarket (i'm gonna soon), but if you want to save a little $, you can

i agree, but i personally have the copper version. i wished i have gotten the hybrid version to lighten things up. also, you can buy a zalman PCI fan bracket and add a 120mm on top of the HSF for extra cooling.:D

I know that cooler master heatsinks are known to be "mid grade" coolers.

However, I'm getting very good performance from my Aero 7 (lapped). Plus, its relatively cheaper than the others.

Just a thought

Agree with adams828...dont need superior solution to OC a 2500+ to a 3200+. A retail HSF will even work. I ordered a SilentBoost when I ordered the 2500+. So, I am using the SilentBoost. But, I tried the retail and it worked fine just was a bit warmer. The retail has a large cooper base with aluminum fins. The ALX-800 looks like a nice product also. If you must go with non-retail, the SilentBoost is good and comes with a fan.
