AMD Athlon XP 2100+ Overheating?

Hi all,

I just bought a AMD Athlon XP 2100+ with a Epox 8K3A+ DDR333.

The hardware guy offered to install the processor as he said it is easy to damage. He put a AMD specified heatsink with fan on the processor. Put when I installed the rest, memory, graphicscard etc. I noticed when booting to the bios the CPU core temparature reached 40-50 degrees celcius. When I booted to WindowsXP I found that the core temperature reached 63-65 degrees celcius, when running nothing but WindowsXP. The processor is on 133 speed.

Did I install my rig faulty? What is the perfect temperature for running a AMD Athlon XP 2100+, and if lower what kind of coolers should I look at, as this cooler should also work with my processor?

Appreciate any help I can get.

I believe the 8K3A is one of the first boards to read the temperature by using the thermister built into the processor. (As opposed to other boards that read the thermister mounted in the processor socket that just guestimates the temperature) If that is the case, your temps are normal.
 
A quick check of the Epox website doesn't confirm or deny the built-in thermistor monitoring suggestion (it says the board Supports Hardware Monitoring Function by W83697HF) , so the first thing I would check is the installation of the heatsink, to make sure it was done properly. Did the guy use any thermal paste? If not, your temps will sky-rocket (even with a cheap paste). That board may very well use the built-in thermistor (I am unsure about this), but I would check the HS anyway...that's just me 🙂

I am a little reasured now but still wanting to know for sure.

The hardware guy did use 'glue/paste', the same he used for building the systems they sell. (You can choose the components and they'll fit it out for you). Also the cpu and cooling seem rightly adjusted. My system temperature is around 30 degreed celcius.

If this (62-65 degrees celcius, when idle) is the normal temperature for my Atlon XP 2100, is it possible to get the temp to around 30 degrees celcius? Or is the processor just very hot? I looked everywhere on the net but all the articels I found just contained reviews about performance, comparing to P4 etc.

Has anyone experience with this?

 
What kind of system temps do you have?

And yes, hte 8k3a and 8k3a+ both read from the internal diode.

Therefore, with int. diode temps + the retail heatsink, 65C really isn't htat bad.

i'm confused. according to anadtech's article the only ones that read the internal diode temps are the a7v333 and the msi kt ultra. kt333 roundup article
do the epox 8k3a+ boards now have onboard die temperature sensing?

 
I have a A7V333 with an XP2200+ and a Volcano7 HSF. After much work to get it to run stable at 1800mhz my idle is 55C and I haven't worked much to put a load on it but I did run 3DMARK2001se and temp went up to 57C. This is with the stock themal pad that came on the HSF. Not sure how accurate the temps are. I have heard varying things as to accuracy with temp readings of these boards. I can tell you that I read the Tom's Hardware round up and I didn't see any diodeto read off the chip. Maybe I missed it.

Master do you know if you used a good thermal paste? I plan to take off my HSF and put some Artic Silver 3 on there, hope that might lower temps a bit.

The 8K3A+ uses a fairly large heatsink on the North Bridge without a fan and uses a thermistor in the center of the CPU socket for temperature measurement. Update: Apparently the 8K3A+ does offer support for the Athlon XP's internal diode as pointed out by AnandTech Forum member N8.
Having an A7V333-R, I did some experiments on it. Bottom line, although the board does monitor the CPU diode for an emergency overheat situation (eg, if the heatsink came off), the end user cannot see that reading. The temperatures you see in the BIOS, and in Asus Probe, come from a socket thermistor mounted to the surface of the motherboard. I'm still waiting for anyone to confirm whether this is the situation for the MSI board as well.
 
I have an Athlon XP 1700+ running on an Asus A7V266-C. I'm getting the same temperatures too. Does anyone know if the A7V266-C reads from an internal diode too? I am worried that I'm going to overheat my processor.
