I just found out that my HTPC motherboard (DFI-RS482 Infinity) overkills the processor (Socket 939 Sempron 3000+) so I might ended up upgrading the processor later on this summer and get a simpler motherboard for the Sempron.

I believe the price/performance ratio for me falls upon the X2 4200+ Manchester. However, I found in ewiz site that there are two versions of such CPU. The first one is ADA4200DAA4BV and the second one is ADA4200DAA5CD. Both are E4 steppings.

I'm confused.

Which one has better performance or has better ability to overclock of the two?

Looks like the 5CD is a latter revision but is latter always better?

For similar $, you can get a new Opty dual-core from newegg, and they generally o/c better than X2s.

so you are saying that 512K extra L2 Cache is better than the extra 400Mhz for the same price?

Yes the Opteron 165 will easily OC to the same speed and likely much faster than the 4200+ X2, then the extra cache will offer a bit of extra boost, not much though. The perf diff between 512kb and 1mb of L2 cache is only approx 5%-8%.

No, he said that it will overclock to a higher speed. The added cache is just a bonus. BTW, in my 26+ years of dealing with computers, this is the first time I've heard of a motherboard "overkilling" a processor. What exactly are you talking about?

The motherboard has more features than the chip had to offer.

I mean granted I can overclock the hell out of the chip but I'm building a HTPC not an overclocking machine.

so I bought a Biostar Geforce 9100-M9 for the Sempron and am still thinking what CPU to get for the DFI board
