Hello
I'm building a budget PC. Here are the requirements as answers to the standard questionnaire:

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
BROWSING, OFFICE, MUSIC, CODING C++ and FORTRAN
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
Rs 7000 to Rs 8000
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
INDIA
4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
NO PREFERENCE
5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
HDD, MONITOR, KYB-MOUSE
*

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
NO

8. What resolution will you be using?
1280x800 minimum

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
IN A MONTH (May-June 2012)

X. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?
NO

I'm basically confused about the processor. Should I go for AMD Athlon II X2 260 or Intel Pentium DualCoreG620. My usage is just office work , browsing and coding C++ and FORTRAN. I intend to use Linux as the OS.

The Intel is generally faster (where it's faster its much faster, and where it's slower, it's barely slower) and consumes considerably less power than the AMD. All else being equal, I can't see any reason to go with the Athlon.

Hi, thanks for suggesting. I have another cost effective option of Sempron.
Consider these two combinations:
1) AMD Sempron 145 with 4GB RAM
2) AMD Athlon X2 260 with 2GB RAM

Mobo, HDD and other components remain the same.
Which one would perform better for office work?
Would the weaker Sempron be noticeable in offcie use? If its very slight difference in office usage performance, I can go for a Sempron and cut some cost. What do you advise? I dont want to upgrade it in future. I'll use it for a year maximum. Then a fresh low-cost build.

I wouldn't get a Sempron, because they only have a single core. (or, two cores with gimped L2 cache)
