It says the device driver isn't installed. I go to install the driver in Device Manager, it shows that it finds a K8 driver automatically and after trying to install it for a few seconds it says "Driver is not intended for this platform"

Is this CPU not supported by XP Pro?

I'm running a Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro mobo, with the latest BIOS, v.14. I flashed the mobo BIOS a few days ago, before installing it. When I boot, the BIOS is identified as v.14. The original BIOS was v.11. Interestingly, AMDCPUid utility is identifying the BIOS version as F11. I think that's an error, and it's really F14 (i.e. v.14). Gigabyte site says F14 BIOS is necessary for this mobo.

The new AMD processor driver only works with XP SP2. If you only have SP1, you're supposed to use the older driver.

Um, I'm not on the machine right now, but I'm 99% sure it's running SP2. I did all recommended Windows Updates right after installing XP, and besides that I think the install CD is SP2 already.

Yes, it's SP2.

I called AMD tech support and hooked up with a support specialist and we discussed this for around 5 minutes. He asked if the processor was correctly identified in AMDCPUInfo utility, and I said yes. He said there really aren't drivers for CPUs, it's just something that identifies the processor and as long as it's being correctly identified in Control Panel/System and correct speed I should probably just forget about it. It's just an anomaly in the way my system is dealing with the devices or driver. I don't remember his exact words.

I just solved the problem. In system configuration, problem devices, I saw the problem announced, just as I did in Device Manager, basically:

ACPI\AUTHENTICAMD_-_X86_FAMILY_15_MODEL_44\_0
The drivers for this device are not installed.

I did a google search on the first line and got this direct hit:

Removing Intel CPU support on AMD system gives Device Manager error., Why?

The guy was getting the exact same errror I was getting and he resolved it by downloading and installing an AMD K8 driver. In spite of the fact that CPU's don't need drivers, a "driver" is required for the OS to recognize the processor. These guys are saying that the error is the result of removing Intel CPU support, a peculiar thing. Anyway, I made the following download, ran setup.exe, rebooted, and the problem is now gone:

AMD K8 Processor Driver 1.3.2.0053 WHQL

I'll save that driver for if/when I reinstall Windows with this setup.
