AMD Athlon CPU chip/crack Q's

Before I upgraded I had a Palamino 2000+ and I chiped the corner of it with that really crappy heatsink that chipped everybody else's chips. But the chip still worked well. Is there a layer of protection on the chip or did i hit some cache. What do you think happened.
