Hi, I want to buy a new cpu and my target is AMD. I am not sure which AMD that I want to get so can somebody provide me suggestion and maybe tell me the differences between them? Also what motherboard is good enough for this chip. Thanks

The Thunderbird is the newer version of the Athlon, much like the Coppermine is the new version of the PIII. The Thunderbird is definitely better. Although it has half the cache of the Athlon Classic, it outperforms it considerable because the cache in on die and is running at full speed.

Well they are the same thing except the thunderbird has an improved cache so the thunderbird is better. It is like the difference between a Lexus and a Lexus LS. Also the thunderbirds are almost all Socket A chips while the classic athlon was slot A. Get the MSI K7T Pro2A and a thunderbird chip and you should be set. Check out sharkyextreme.com for a good cpu price list and find one that fits your budget(they're all super cheap right now).

I agree go with the T-bird & MSI K7T PRO2-A or if you are not going to overclock & don`t need ATA-100 then the little brother MSI K7T PRO will do a great job & save you some money.
