AMD Athlon 64X2 question

Hello

I have a HP DX5150 desktop PC, I was wondering if its possible to replace the single core Processor and put in a Dual core processor.

Here is the Processor that is in it now:

AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+

I was wondering if I can replace it with this:

AMD Athlon 64X2
Dual Core Processor 3800+
2.0 GHZ 2000MHZ FSB
512KB L2 cache per core

Both socket 939?

Might have to re-install Windows to get dual core support.

I swapped from a 3000+ single-core to a 3800+ dual-core and Windows recognized it as a dualie, so that part will probably be OK. Last time I looked at Socket939 prices, however, they were pretty high

Im not sure about the Socket 939 - I will have to check: Whats the easiest way to check

Also reinstall of Vista with no problem..

If I did this switch would I see a noticeable difference - If not I would just leave the single core in the PC

I installed the chip and without reinstalling windows its showing AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual core processor 3800+ 2.0GHZ

I noticed the speed difference right away. cable internet speed jumped a lot faster as well..

Also in device manager is showing both cores

Good to hear everything is working. But you may want to check that you have this update installed.

Otherwise you may not be getting the full performance out of your CPU. I know i had to foce the update when i went from a 3500 to an Opt 165. Same with my other system when i went from teh 3500 to the 3800 X2. The systems had some minor performance issues that where fixed after the update.

He has Vista, that link is only for Windows XP computers.

Sweet. I did the exact same thing a year ago - put a 3800 X2 replacing a single core A64 3000.

The difference is huge! If you're an average user with no need for a really fast PC for gaming or encoding, a 3800 X2 is more than good enough.
