AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ -- How does it compare to the Core 2 Duo?

Found a great deal last night on a new system complete with AMD's 5600+

I've been searching everywhere for a direct comparison between this chip and the Intel Core 2 Duo models but haven't had much luck. Does anyone have any experience with AMD's new 5600? Are there any benchmarks yet to compare performance?

Any help appreciated.

The X2 5600+ is just a rebranded FX-62 from what I've read, so just read any C2D review with an FX-62 for comparison and you have a direct comparison. ;)

In a nutshell, it's slightly slower than an E6600 overall.

Thanks,

I see the specs on the 5600+ are 2.8GHZ x 2 with 2MB of cache. Are you sure that doesn't make it a little faster than a Core 2 E6600 (2.4ghz x 2)?

The processor alone costs $500 retail and I got it + a whole farking computer for $630 shipped. It's either a really good deal, or the processor is just overpriced at the moment...

The FX-62 is also 2.8GHz with 2MB cache. The E6600 has 2X2MB cache for a total of 4MB shared cache.

You can't compare processors based on clockspeed, C2D is a more efficient per clock.

Numerous reviews have shown that the E6600 is slightly faster than an FX-62 overall.

What else are you getting with the 5600+ with the $630 PC? I hope it's not 512MB RAM with onboard graphics/sound and a 80GB HDD. ;)

LOL, 80GB is plenty for me ;) And it has an integrated Nvidia card...mwahahaha

It's ok...I have 2 gigs of extra RAM + a 7900GT to throw in there. I can sell the 512ram that comes with it for $30, so I'm basically paying $100 for the case, motherboard, keyboard, warranty, and convenience of not having to build it myself.

Thanks alot for the replies guys. I'll probably punch myself for keeping this when the quad cores come down in price, but my current Pentium 4 really needs a upgrade.

It's still a pretty good deal, but check if you can get an E6600 build for around the same price. If you can I'd get that instead.

The E6600 is about $300, a mobo around $150, so that's $450, an 80GB HDD is what, like $50 nowadays right? $500... hmm, what else do you need? Case, PSU etc? What about a monitor, does the $630 deal include a monitor? I assume not?

If you plan on upgrading the graphics, make sure it has a PCI-E 16x slot. OEMs will sometimes not put a slot on their budget models.

which of the 2 is more value for money? I was going to buy one of those cpus too, so which one would you buy if you were to buy them individually?

I've got an impression that the FX series are actually very slightly faster per clock than the mainstream X2 series, probably in the order of 1-2%. Some sites show performance scaling that is better than normally would be expected: http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/cpu/amd-athlon-64-x2-5200.html

The X2 probably needs to be 3.0GHz to equal E6600.

If this is a temporary rig than checkout the Opty 165. The Opty 165 at ~$160.00 could be a good deal. Some Optys will do 2.8GHz+ and will easily match the X2 5600+.

just a thought.;)

Edit: never mind...it looks like you have a socket AM2

Correction, any C2D within 15% of the same clock speed will dominate it ;)
