I'm trying to rma my cpu, Athlon64 3700+, but the folks at AMD said the warrenty for the cpu has been void because I used heatsink fan that didn't come with the cpu. Is this correct? This first time ever I'm trying to RMA a cpu.

Why did you tell them that you didn't use the factory one? Not the best call... Try again, but lie.

Oh, and did you contact them via email? If so, maybe they're just giving you a hard time because you can't spell warranty correctly.

Why would it matter?

Because it's against the warranty to use a heatsink not certified by AMD? Or use Arctic Silver 5 for that matter...

Just call them back and tell them you misunderstood the question.
tell them you thought they ment "used the HSF after mark it" you used a black ink marker to mark the location of tie brackets on the heatsink.
Tell them you are a noob and this is how you installed the heatsink.

I bought it retail. I don't know exactly what's wrong. One thing for sure is that it's dead. My monitor has gone blank all of sudden so I checked cables. I rma my video card, eVGA 7800GTX, motherboard, Asus A8N-SLI deluxe. I realized that my power supply overheated so I've got new one. So I got replacement for motherboard, and video card but I still don't see any difference. It's not my monitor either because I've connected it to my laptop and it worked fine. I have replaced everything except this for god saken CPU!
