Hi everyone,

Do you think the upcoming Athlon 64 FX in Socket 940 package and dual-channel DDR SDRAM will have any tangible advantage if applied on a graphics workstation?

I am not very savvy on such highly technical matters.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks

Is the Athlon 64 FX going to work in the socket 940 or is it the chip that gets the socket 939?

And to answer your question, I think it would speculation to say this, but it should do well as long as it can maintain good data bandwith's and latency. Its IPC will eventually be augmented by software written for 64 bits and then it will perform well.

If your question is, will it be faster than a similarly priced P4 or Xeon based system (or even a Prescott based one). Maybe depends on the configurations of both systems. And Prescott is as big an unknown as the Athlon 64, so ..........??????

Just guessing.

I am sure the 939 will be too, as it will be replacing the 940 (according to your article..:) ).

What socket is the opteron?

Admitedly, I am getting confused with the various upcoming Athlon 64 CPUs.

Which is what?
Why?
What for ?

does anyone have an article explaining the differences between all these.

Thanks

I just hope they are designed on the newer architecture unlike the xps that were built on the old architecture

Uhhh . . . it's a 64-bit CPU. Is that a big enough change in architecture for you? ;)

It's really 64-bit instructions added to the K7 core. Obviously, there are other improvements such as HyperTransport and the onboard memory controller... But it's still heavily based on the K7 architecture.
