I just got an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 1MB L2 Cache Processor, socket 754, without a cpu fan, i happen to have an older unused cpu fan for an AMD Athlon XP 2500, would they be compatible? thanks in advance.

Unfortunately not. :( They are different in a lot of ways.

No problem. By the way, if you want an advance view of what the attachment mechanism is like for the Athlon 64's heatsink type, here's some photos of my Alpha 8150 that I bought recently (haven't used it yet): photo spread

As you can see, the A64 heatsinks are symmetrical and use a straightforward two-bolt attachment setup, not the lug-style clip like the AthlonXP heatsinks did.

But retail HSF, and my own, are much easier. There are clips on both sides that connect to a large plastic piece on the motherboard, that you put on by hand, then turn the lever to put pressure on the HSF to CPU. Even an idiot can do it , and without tools !!!!
