AMD Athlon 64 3700+ vs. AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200

Hi All,
I think I want to upgrade to the dual processor but have a question. Since most app's don't use both processors, when running just one processor of the 4200 say for a game, will the dual processor be faster than the 3700? This question assumes the 3700 and 4200 are running stock speeds.

Thanks,
J.

i think the X2 would be faster, because the X2 can take care of little background things, games actually do use both cores sometimes.

Unless you are running multiple apps, the 3700 will be faster.. But not a lot..

When I switched to X2, I ran some tests, where I would play MP3's, and transcode a DVD while I ran a bench like 3DMark2001..

With a single core, the bench score would drop by about half, whereas with the X2 it would only drop by about a third..

If you can afford the X2, I think you should go for it.

Edit: Reason being, most games do not need more speed than a single core of the X2 can provide. And in the future many games will use the twin cores.

why would the 3700+ be faster? the 3700+ and the 4200+ have the same cache and clockspeed.

I have a chance to get it now and am OK if I can't fully appreciate the benefits right away. I just don't want to lose any speed from what I currently have.

No one stated which 3700+ they were speaking of.

A socket 754 3700+ = a socket 939 4000+.
