I'm surprised at the lack of interest in this deal. This is a good 50 bucks less than the nearest competitor (newegg). Plus, you can get Socket 754 nForce 4 based motherboards in which this can be installed. Combine this with the $99 1GB Kingston HyperX memory deal and you have a very nice platform for gaming and it won't set you back an arm and a leg.

This is a great chip. I have it in my gaming machine along with a 6800 Ultra and every game I throw at it runs as smooth as silk!

By the way...I bought this same chip yesterday at Ewiz for $171. Anybody that's interested in one might want to check it out.

If this were 939 then it would be smokin. However now that 3000 venice chips are about $125, and can OC to atleast 2.5, this 754 deal isn't as good. Still hot none to less.

For crying out loud...NOT EVERYBODY OVERCLOCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For most folks out there (myself included), they would rather pay the extra 50 bucks for something that is GUARANTEED to run at the speed they want. These are not the days of Intel's $700 Pentium II 450 vs. a $125 Celeron 300A. For guaranteed performance, this is a helluva deal.

Eh, I think you're better off spending your money on S939. But if not EWiz has a good deal on the same chip:

Care to elaborate on that statement? In Anandtech's own review:

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2065&p=1

the socket 754 chip performs within fractions of a percentage point of the equivalent socket 939 chip with the same clock speed. I don't see the point in spending 75% more for a S939 chip for less than 1% performance improvement.

If you're referring to upgrading the chip later on, I'd like to see a show of hands of how many people actually upgrade ONLY the CPU in their system without a motherboard upgrade. Furthermore, for a person buying a CPU/motherboard at this moment in time, they probably won't be ready to upgrade the CPU for 6-12 months at the very earliest. At that point, the new DDR2 Athlon 64s will be out and will require a new motherboard anyway.

Like I said, please elaborate. :)

P.S. Even kamranziadar thought it was a good deal. That dude normally hates everyone else's deals!

This looks perfect for upgrading my brother. He currently runs a two year old AXP 2600+ setup and likes to game so this would be leaps ahead for him.

I wonder if this plummeting price has anything to do with the article on the front page of Anandtech about AMD "encouraging" retailers to clear out their OEM chips and only sell retail versions...
