Yesterday I purchased a Compaq Presario R3370US Model containing The Athlon64 3000+ CPU. Its operating system is Windows XP : Home Edition. I went into system to see the system statistics, pretty much a happy geek. When I noticed it said. "AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ 797MHz, 512mb of RAM Physical Address Extension. The CPU Is supposed to be clocked at 1.8ghz.

Now, my question is. Is it the driver amd has in there to decrease power to the cpu when my load doesnt demand it?

#2. Is it xp home?

#3. Is it how home sees it because its 64-bit architecture?

#4. Why does it say that?

#5. How can I fix it. Please :*

Any help or relevant info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It just sounds like the CPU is throttling itself down whilst its not doing heavy applications. I know my A64 3000+ has something called Cool and Quiet technology, which does just this. So it will only ramp up to the full 1.8ghz when its necessary *eg when playing games etc..*

If you can check your BIOS settings to see whether its enabled. If it is then hopefully that answers your question. Leave it enabled as its a power saving feature i believe. *As well as reducing heat*

I checked my BIOS to double check to see if things were just out of whack. BIOS Shows 1800mhz even across the board. So Bios shows me the correct info. And I downloaded AMD CPUINFO, it says CPU Maximum Speed 1800 Mhz. I guess its best.

Im also looking at Windows XP 64-bit Edition, what kind of OS performance boost would I be looking at upgrading to that os?.

I nice PROS/CONS List would be veryyy sexy. Thanks in advance.

I've not actually tried it out myself yet to be honest but Anand reviewed the preview version back in Feb this year you can read what he says about it here Anands XP 64 bit preview review

Its a short review so its worth looking at even if you don't want to read a huge review. Just go to final words page for a brief summary of what to expect.

The most relevant points are probably these

We do suggest you use the caution of setting it up on a separate drive or installing your current OS as a multi-boot with XP64 preview.

The actual performance under Windows XP 64-bit Preview showed great promise, but it is still something of a mixed bag. We were impressed that the CPU, Floating Point, and memory ALL showed performance improvement in XP64 compared to regular XP. This promises that we will eventually see the performance improvements in applications that is potentially there in the move to 64-bit extensions. We were also impressed with the 15%+ improvement in Media Encoding when running the same 32-bit encoding program under XP and XP64. Performance of current 32-bit games under SP64, however, was below expectations.

there are still unanswered concerns about how current 32-bit software, in particular games, will run on the release version of Windows XP 64-bit. Drivers and further optimizations will certainly improve and possibly remove this 20% performance penalty in gaming. This is, after all, a preview version with immature drivers and almost no graphics support. We have no doubt after this preview that 64-bit applications will run faster, but we really don't yet have an answer to the question of how existing 32-bit games will run. We should have a better answer to this in the next few months.

Hope this helps
