I've just put a new system together with an AMD Athlon 64 3000+. I was wondering if there is a reasonably priced replacement for the OEM fan that would be quieter? Anyone know decibel rating for the OEM fan? I haven't been able to find that for comparison with replacement fans.

Aren't a whole lot of A64 HSF's around yet, but perhaps a Zalman CNPS 7000 would do well if you have like $40 to spend.

I use a thermaltake (or is it thermalright? I don't remember) Venus 12 with a Panflo L1A which is basically silent. My temps are 25 - 28 idle thanks to Cool and Quiet and never break 39 under load, read by mbm5.

If you remove the fan from the Retail HS it should have the make/model listed on the exhaust side, which will allow you to find that information.

I would keep that stock fan.
From what I know, it should be a Delta Dual ball bearing 70x70x20 varible speed fan.
The fan has temp probe and will vary its speed according to the temp reading.
I believe the fan can go as high as 6000 rpm when temp is exetremely hot, otherwise it usually spins at minimum speed to keep the noise low.

If you replace it with some TT or other brand, it will be a fixed speed fan which might not provide you sufficient air flow during hot days.

just get the zalman, it'll save you some trouble in the future. Besudes, it will most likely lower yout CPU's temps as well.

Another vote for the Zalman 7000 series. Just choose whichever one. I helped install a CNPS-7000-AlCu one for a friend on his A64 3000+ and he has been pleased with it.

rather than blow money on a $40 cnps 7000

what i did was sell my original gigabyte k8vt800m, and buy a k8v asus board (ended up costing me like $20 more)

i guess the msi k8t neo also has this freature, but these 2 boards, dynamically control fan voltage based on cpu temps. i already had an arctic cooling silencer 64 (its pretty quiet as is, better than retail fan anyway) and with one of those mobos, its silent at idle and even at load (since the athlon 64 3000 doesnt get that hot)
