this is my set-up

Amd Athlon 3000+ FSB 400 Mhz 2.15 Ghz CPU Running at 1 Ghz due to system instability
Kingston Value Ram PC 3200 512 MB DDR Ram
120 GB Western Digital 8 MB Special Edition HD
a7n8x-x Asus Nforce 400 Motherboard
--------------------------- if you need more then that let me know--

I use to have a AMD Athlon 2700+ FSB 333 mhz CPU overclocked at 2.2 Ghz and it came with a cool looking fan.
So I sold the cpu, and kept the fan thinking it would do me a favor when I purchased the 3000+
Now I look at my system, and it won't start up. It shuts itself down automatically, when I go into the Safe Bios Mode, it shows my CPU temperature at 187* F!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is that Normal? am I going insane? do I need a new fan? OMG!

the main reason why I got the 3000+ was for the increase in cache size, and the 400 Mhz FSB, so it can run parrell (sorry for my spelling) to my Ran which suppose to run at 400 as well. My 2700+ was only running at 333, which had issues with the ram at 400. So in the end, the ram also ran at 333. Bummer!

Now I am in a (S_IT) hole, because the system won't even boot in the speed the CPU was made to run at, can anyone give me some hints as what to do? what to get? Thanks alot!

Confirm that your heatsink is oriented like this and not like this, as well as the good advice already given. Welcome to the Forums, by the way :)

thanks for your warm welcome, and yes it was the PASTE under the old heatsink.

I just purchased a Antec 3000+ CPU Cooling Solution (Heatsink/Fan)
now it's down to 103* F, from 189*F

the system booted up, with the ram running at 200 Mhz, like it should be. My PC is alittle iffy, but works.
For example, if I try to install ATI Radeon 4.4 Catalyst, it says, File not Found. Hmm, maybe thats just my operating system, but so far so good.

Thanks all for your help!

I suspect that the old heatsink has the original paste on it, which should only ever be used once, then replaced once the heatsink has been removed from the processor. It needs to be replaced by some other paste.
