AMD Athlon 2200+ XP

I'm running on a 2000+ atm and can't get above 1,825 Ghz when overclocking. Since I can't afford to upgrade my mobo, RAM and CPU I'm thinking of just upgrading the CPU and hsf. I found a reeeeaaally cheap 2200+ Thoroughbred that would fit my needs nicely. How big of an overclock do you think I might be able to get with RAM rated at PC2700?

I'm not sure whether it's an A- or B-core.

Serial nr is only listed as "Thoroughbred" on AMD's site, but doesn't specify if it's an A or B.

Nr: AXDA2200DUV3C

Cheers!

I so eager to get a nice overclockable chip! But I guess I'll wait a while and get a Sempron 3100 and a 754 board, if high quality mem chips ever drop in price that is...

In answer to your question about the 2200+ chip, it has the multiplier locked at 13.5, but you can unlock it easily enough using conductive liquid. If you do not want to worry with painting a super fine line, you are stuck with 13.5 and given the RAM you have, you are topped at 166 FSB unless you want to push your RAM as well.

13.5 X 166 = 2241 as the max you could get out of this chip without unlocking multiplier or pushing your RAM as well.

Now 2241 would be the top side IMO, you could probably expect to do 2200 with no problems. Keep in mind though that all chips are different, so move up slowly and see where it tops out. My 2200 T-bred does 2160 without any sort of stress or heat at all.

As for whether or not it would be economically viable or not, if we are talking $20 chip, then I would say go for it. If you are talking $50, then save up your cash.
