I have an AMD Athlon 2200 which is according to the BIOS - it's a PcChips Motherboard: M863G (V5.1A) Socket A and FSB333/DDR333 Motherboard

See here for more specs:

http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWebSit...D=1&DetailName=Specification&MenuID=1&LanID=0

Anyway I replaced the exiting MB in my Compaq Presario s3150uk as the previous board had problems with leaky capacitors etc.. So I purchased the one mentioned above off EBay and installed it. I also re-used the original heat sink/fan and used the correct amount of silver thermal paste etc.. However despite using several different methods of applying the thermal paste etc (from the net) the processor still runs very hot according to the bios. I have even replaced the heatsink/fan unit to no avail. temps are 114 Fahrenheit / 45 Celsius. System temp reads: 97 Fahrenheit / Celsius 36. Even when I switch on from completely cold the processor reads: 70 Fahrenheit / 21 Celsius in the bios and climbs quite quickly.

I have also contacted pcchips support who have informed me that there is no bios update required as everything is compatible with the processor etc..

On touch the heatsink is not hot or anything; just cool.

Any ideas anyone?

Someone mentioned the thermal sensors maybe faulty; I not sure if these reside on the MB or the processor however.

Any offer of help or your thoughts would be really helpful.

Are the idle temperatures 45c for the CPU? If so, that's completely normal for that CPU especially with an average or stock fan. Try seeing how hot she gets under load, if it's in the mid-high 60s then worry.

If it helps any, my XP2500 at stock voltage/multiplier idles at about 39-40C with an all-copper Thermaltake unit (single 80mm fan). That's about the coolest I've ever been able to get it with air.

Hey, thanks for the comments made; my processor is running at 45/46 Celsius and 50/52 Celsius under a load. Looks like it might be OK then?

It's bog standard aluminium cooler and fan; like when manufactured originally; its a Compaq presario s3150uk

Regards

that's fine. concern would come in the upper 60s. i forgot to plug the fan into an athlon xp once and the temp went up into the 70s before the system crashed.

These older Athlon XP chips only had thermal shutdown, so temps are read from an external thermistor underneath the CPU.

45C idle 55-65C load are normal from what I remember. Many XP chips ran hot, especially the Palomino core.

Don't worry about it - it's WAYYYY off thermal throttling and will probably outlast the motherboard. Just do a quick Google search and read some old threads and reviews.

In fact, those chips are so cheap second hand now (*COUGH* ebay *COUGH*) you might as well upgrade it to the fastest Athlon XP the board supports. It will probably run cooler as well if it's a newer core.
