means they're made at a certain plant/time or otherwise simply are of higher quality than the rest of the cpus, and thus overclock better

it always comes down to luck in the end though..

So what Socket A 266FSB AMD chip has the highest Cache right now , and would it make a difference ?

They all have the same amount of cache, it's just that certain steppings seem to overclock better than others. AYHJA steppings are considered the best overclockers right now, followed by AXIA steppings.

Okay... I'm gonna order this thing, but which heatsink/fan should I get? Somebody said the Thermaltake Volcano stuff is good, but there are different versions and I don't really know which would be best to go with. I'm kinda nervous about the idea of overclocking the cpu at all, really, since it sounds like you have to make a physical change to the cpu, how difficult is it?

Hey, I'm going to order this also. What Motherboard do you recommend for this? Any input would be appreciated, thanks....

I'd recommend the EPOX 8K7A+, or the DFI AK76. DFI is cheaper/faster/more stable, but Epox has more options/RAID/better overclocking options. You choose :)

Thermopyl3, to manually overclock the chip, it's called bridging. You can use a number 2 pencil or conductive ink to do this. It's risky though, you should just buy one of the boards above, they will let you do this onboard, so you won't have to resort to manually "bridging", especially since if you have to destroy a bridge that is already there, it's very dangerous to the chip. Adding bridges with a number 2 isn't hard, it's just taking unwanted bridges off that is the problem. HOpe this helps!

Ah, you don't have to do the briding thing? That's cool... was afraid I'd have to do that, and wondered how so many people could be willing to give it a try and think of overclocking thier cpu so casually when that was what was required... seemed weird, to me... o_O;

So, getting the Epox would work? I'll probably do that then. I don't really like jumpers much though, how about using the Abit? That would work too, right?

BTW, I picked up the Volcano 5, since that was what a few people specified in another thread as being a good choice.

I know the Swiftech is a good heatsink to use... but it's kinda loud. I never heard of Abit making a DDR board, are you going to use this chip with PC133 or PC100 RAM? I would recommend a DDR board and go with PC2100 or PC1600. Just my opinion though for this chip, and it's a great price :)

The abit is the KG7, and got a better review on Tom's page than the Epox in the recent roundup of boards with the 760 chipset.

I already picked up 512megs of crucial ddr 2100, it arrived today, in fact. Now all I have to do is get a motherboard and a second monitor... ;(

According to Tom's it is. He reccommended either the Abit or some other board, I forget which. The Abit was because it was completely stable and the fastest, the other was because it had lots of extra features. Go check the article out, it's one of the newest ones... has 9 different 760 boards.

The Abit is a good board, but not worth the extra $50 over the EPOX EP-8K7A+
