"AMD approved power supply" - Really needed??

I have a Supermicro SC750-A case with a Sparkle 300W Power supply. The page to get to the approved power supplies on AMD's site is down.

My case is relatively new, and I want to go after work to get an Athlon 1.4, and I don't have time to go check the model number on my PS.

Anyone know if this model is approved or if it really matters??

I also have a question about the issue. Is there something wrong with using cases and PSUs which were designed for P4 for Athlon?
From what I understand it doesnt matter.

Well Sparkle PSUs are high quality, and PSUs are one part of your computer that you don't want to skimp out on. But yeah, Sparkle PSUs are good quality so it should all be good. But depending on the devices you'll want to install, you should go with a 400W+ PSU.

What devices are you referring to?

If my system looked like this, would I need a 400 watt PS?

Athlon 1.4 266fsb
MSI KT266-R mobo
512 mb PC2100 Mushkin DDR RAM
SB Live MP3
Maxtor 30 GB 7200 Diamondmax
Creative GeForce 2 GTS
Plextor 24/10/40
Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM

you will be fine; with just that; dont add any more hardrives and definately no peltiers.

also ive heard many people have trouble overclocking past 1.4 without high end powersupplys (brand name 400W + ones that is)

300W will power that without a hitch!

No. AMD approval means nothing. Kind of like THX certification for speakers (especially PC speakers). It's nice to have your stuff approved, but it's more marketing than anything else.
