AMD Appoints Dr. Lisa Su as President and Chief Executive Officer

I get the feeling Rory was only there to cut off bits and get AMD to stop bleeding out. Now that he's gone, I'm taking it to mean he's done amputating limbs and AMD is moving towards a different goal now, so he's not needed anymore.

At OP's request, this thread is for discussing GPU-specific subject matter only. Discuss CPU-specific subject matter in the thread in the CPUs forum.

Someone had to do it. And it looks like they're not done yet.

Yes he made several M$, but the stress and all - poor guy must have lost 10 years of his life.

Well, I've read that AMD cut prices (or will soon) on their R9 290 and 290x as their first response to Nvidia's release of the GTX 970 and 980 GPUs. Since the Board of Directors appointed her, I'm curious to see what vision she has and what AMD does next besides discounting prices. I hope they have some secret weapon to challenge Maxwell. That way, there will be more discounts on GPUs and we, the consumers, will win in the end! The GTX 780 and 780 Ti are getting ridiculously cheap.

I was curious if they are taking the route of HP and spin out ATI again.

Even if ATI is spun off, the damage has been done through the layoffs of so many engineering employees. I don't see ATI coming close to NV's architectural prowess anytime soon. Since we spend so much longer per process node, architecture matters more and more. NV's Tegra efforts probably helped generate new discussions on how to get more perf/watt and that led to the Maxwell butt-kicking we're witnessing today.

My guess is more commitment to efficiency and perhaps they might manage to get some more custom iGP business. Su is publicly enthusiastic about embedded solutions and console like deals.

AMD isn't discounting prices at all. They refuted that a couple days ago. Any price reductions that are happening or will happen are strictly discounts given by the AIBs.

after all the recent years and generations amd is once not first to bring a new arch or nodejump and everybody asumes amd wont come back 😀:awe:
no one seems to care that the new maxwell cards are the bigges ever build midrange cards with almost 400mm² die size. its powerconsumption is not made of fairydust and wont be something that cant be achieved by amd too.

I recall reading several times (on these boards) that AMD's GPU business is supporting the rest of the company...so if true, how would it make sense to spin that business off? The only possible logic I could see in that would be if all other AMD businesses were to be divested or otherwise axed. And if that happened, you wouldn't need to spin off the GPU business as it would be the only part left. Am I missing something here?

That's too bad, it would've been a smart move. Although I firmly support Nvidia, I'm rooting for AMD to do something, anything to counter the 970/980. Competition is needed to keep prices reasonable.

As tightly as AMD has bound themselves to the graphics cores in their APUs, I don't see them spinning off the old ATI division at all. It would be cutting out one of the strongest parts of the company.
