I was very surprised that no one else posted this. Anyway, I noticed that AMD was up more than 5% today, so I looked at the news and saw this:

<< Advanced Micro Devices (AMD:NYSE - news) rose 7% in midmorning trading after CNET News reported that the chipmaker is teaming up with rival Transmeta (TMTA:Nasdaq - news) to break into the lucrative server market and take on Intel (INTC:Nasdaq - news).
Transmeta was down 6.3%. Other chip stocks, after slumping at the open, turned positive. Intel was up 1.1% and the Phildadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index was up 2.4%.

No comments from me - I just saw it and thought you guys might be interested.

A link to the original CNET story is here

This is actually old news (just a new article about old news). Not sure why they just caught on to put up an article about it.

Rather sad that CNet can bring up something that was already talked about and it effects the market...

Zeeliv- This is not old news. It has been rumored that AMD and Transmeta would team up for something but no one knew what it was. Now the silence is broken and its official. Transmeta is helping AMD w/ simulators for its Sledgehammer chips using its code morphing tech. Anyway, this is very new news that reafirms many assumptions about their relationship.

Good post PM, I too am surprised that no one posted this.

No, I speciffically remember reading about AMD and transmeta teaming up wherein Transmeta was helping with AMD's Sledgehammer with their code morphing software.

Ahh here it is. It was somewhat rumor, but it was nowhere near as vague as you said. As I said, it's old news...but it's old news that's been made official now.

Funny how no one noticed how slow this 'Sledge emulation is :

<< AMD's Sledgehammer "simulator is quite slow. It runs at speeds like PCs 15 years ago," said a source with a software company, who spoke on condition of anonymity >>

If it's as successful as Crusoe, Intel has very little to worry about ...

That person was refering to AMD's version. That's the whole point of them teaming up with transmeta. Transmeta's version works much better.

midnight rambler-

They are talking about "emulation" not the actual performance of the Sledgehammer chip. It is very taxing on a system to emulate the performance of a chip, especially in software. That is why they are teaming up w/ Transmeta... in order to have a hardware emulator. Again... they are not referring to the actual chip performance itself.
