A semiconductor firm, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE:AMD) took a competitive step on Wednesday, it declared a new worldwide distribution contract with Symmetry Electronics, a distribution leader in the implanted market that includes digital signage, industrial control, automotive, manufacturing, and machine-to-machine technologies.

According to declaration, Symmetry Electronics will instantly start to promote, sells, and prop up the full line of AMD embedded products containing the latest product line up of AMD Embedded R-Series APUs (Accelerated Processing Units). This novel development highlights AMD’s promise to escalating its existence and infiltration in the embedded market, exclusively around the need for high-performance, low-power graphics solutions.

I guess the analyst that asked about structurally low margins should be commended by his boss.

In any case, this is good news. At least AMD will not choke with inventory as they did with Llano.

This is the kind of stuff that I had assumed Rory would bring to AMD owing to Rory's exposure to so many other businesses and their business models in his capacity as the OEM customer at Lenovo.

When Rory was at Lenovo, the people at AMD might not have had much insight into how other businesses operated and what made them successful, but Rory would have seen all that from a top-down perspective in a way AMD could only hope to have a consultant educate them about.

Hopefully Rory has reorganization ideas to bring to the table, basically borrowing other company's successful business models and adopting them as best practices at AMD.

Time will tell though.

Definitely good news, vendor buy-in has been one of AMD's weaknesses since inception.

Rory has a lot less to do with this than jp morgan. The same people responsible for bringing electricity into the home, hopefully they can make something out of amd.

Yeah, the move was good. I was just a bit disappointed they went for Trinity on this partnershi and not even a mention for Kabini. Kabini is far better equipped to deal with this kind of environment, for Trinity it will be yet another low-margin place to sell the chips.

Could you explain your thoughts on this matter?

I assumed that JPM would be involved in the lease back of the Austin Campus, as you really need a bank on this one. But how was JMP involved, or at least where they could have helped the deal between Symmetry Electronics and AMD?

So is it fair to call this the heterogeneous symmetry partnership?

Doubt it. Can be on a later moment, but not now.

The key will be how much of SE product mix will have AMD products, this will determine how much money they will focus on AMD HSA in the future.

AMD never put in much effort into embedded as far as I can remember.

The 2 primary embedded distributors (Avnet/Arrow) are much more interested in pushing Intel's embedded solutions where computing embedded is needed with good reason - Intel's always put in more efforts into it cause they know there's money in it (and Intel's got more resources to diversify their efforts).

SE is known for video solutions and AMD has the right embedded stuff - let's hope Rory makes sure AMD puts right efforts into this because embedded industry's revenue/profit stream is far more stable and consistent once inroads can be paved.
