AMD and Overclocking?

We have all heard the success storys of people with 700-800 durons and thunderbirds, and how well these chips overclock. It is not uncommon to find someone that gets to 1G with these chips. I have heard many say "why spend $500-$700 for a 1G chip when you can get to 1G for less than $100!". I agree with that completely but---- if you buy a 1G chip how far can you take it, or is it already at its limit? Just curious, I never here of anyone pushing their 1G to the limit, is there anyone out there that has tried? How far will it go?

Though i don't know this from first hand experience. The general rule with core yeilds makes me suspect that yes most of the 1 and 1.1Ghz chips are as high as they will go.

Thanks for the reply Buddha Bart. That's kind of what I thought too, but I didn't know for sure either. Anyone else have any "hands on" experience with the 1G or 1.1G and overclocking?

IMHO if you are considering a high end BIRD you can't lose much by buying your mobo of choice and a $70 DURON. Put the squeeze to the Duron and get 850-900. Then ask yourself, do I really need the BIRD ??
If your can't get the Duron to do the dance, your out $70 max, probably be able to sell it for $50. If you find out later that you really need the extra speed, the BIRD will have dropped in price.

Great plan DaddyG! I think most chips now at 0.18micron max at 1.1-1.2Ghz. Unless you use LN cooling or something real wacky.
