amd and ddr2

per topic title, i'm looking to upgrade from my p4-2.6 to an amd 64 x2 3800, but starting to wonder if i should wait for the m2 socket and ddr2 support. seems like it might have more interesting overclocking options, not to mention being more "future proof". on the other hand, it seems to be common accepted fact that ddr2 offers little or no performance boost for amd64 systems.

your thoughts?

thanks,

joe

If you can wait some more, Socket AM2 😉 is a more viable upgrade alternative... There is no improvement over regular DDR, that's true, but the price of the modules is already a lot lower...

Wait till the first reviews appear, and decide then... If you're lucky, S939 X2's may have lowered a lot in price...

You might have a nice wait ahead of you... Then when it does hit production you will ask yourself, do I order a .09 Athlon DDR2 chip now, or wait for the .065 Athlons in a few months.... It is a viscous cycle 🙂

The wait game.. played it, don't like it.
If you want a new machine now, get it now, don't wait any longer for "what might be".
That goes for a lot of things.

If you're happy with what you have right now and you can do everything you need to do, then wait.. but something tells me that you wouldn't be here if your machine worked as well as you wanted 😉

actually, for what i'm doing, my current box is fine ... it's just been a couple of years and i've got the itch ... plus, i really want to get a 7800 which means pcie which means a new mobo which means .... you get the idea!

Then wait... 😉

If you have the patience for it... It might still take some months, but technology evolves, and the 7800 will not be the biggest anymore, so there you could get lucky as well...

yeah, i'm leaning in that direction, anyway, blew a wad on christmas so waiting would be the smartest move right now ....
