It would make a lot more sense for Apple to use AMD chips on desktops and workstations and Intel chips on laptops/mobile.

Intel will have them for sure. Price etc, Intel will offer apple a far better deal, but yes I think AMD could supply the capacity needed but it would put more pressure on them.

IBM's business philosphy no longer allows them to "buy" companies. Instead, they are selling their divisions (as was the case of computers to Lenovo, Hard Disks to Hitachi) and focusing on costumer solutions and foundry.

Aslo, they are too proud of the Power processor.

Sh*t then. Was kinda hoping they'd buy AMD and use east fishkill with FAB30/36 and enter the X86 market. AMD are going to die unless they start making real progress in terms of making money, it's sad but true.

Why does everyone think AMD getting bought out by IBM would be the solution to AMD's problems? AMD, like in every major takeover, would simply be sold off bit by bit (excuse that) and would eventually cease to exist. Think of Alpha - they were bought by Intel I believe, and they are now nowhere to be found.
That is what would happen with AMD, were they bought by IBM.

Apple, in January, had 3.3% of worlwide PC marketshare. How are Intel going to get a 10% gain for taking part of that 3.3% of Apple marketshare? (Full switchover to Intel predicted to take until 2007, so not all Apple PC's would be Intel until then).
IBM wasn't bought out by Lenovo (who are Chinese, not Japanese by the way), their PC brand was bought up, but IBM are still their own company, make PowerPC chips etc, they just don't sell computers anymore, Lenovo do, with IBM's name.
AMD also posted profit at the end of last financial year I believe.
Oh yeah, and AMD's marketshare increase 1.9% at the last count, with Intel down 0.5%.

Queer that... I was certain Chinese didn't want anything to do with Intel due to their higher price. Chinese are not as stupid as some mom and pops that go for Dell because its on the TV, you know?

AMD has had a real market penetration in mainland China due to their low cost solutions. That's what has made them popular there, so... yeah, Chinese LIKE AMD.

It won't hurt AMD at all. They aren't loosing any of the market by apple switching to Intel processors, apple had previously been using IBM/Motorola chips, so AMD doesn't loose anything, but Intel does gain a bit. The only area they loose is in name recognition, again.

Its VERY stupid for Apple to move desktops to Intel, considering that ALL of their benchmarks where done ALWAYS runing against a Pentium class processor. Its plain stupid. Should they chose AMD... that'd give them a great boost.

Compaq bought Digital, who made the Alpha CPU's/systems.
Compaq failed to see the potential in it, so Alpha went from being the undisputed champ to gradually being overtaken by other CPU's, though it took quite some time.
HP bought Compaq, and decided that Itanium was the future, and decided to somewhat mercifully kill PA-RISC(HP's inhouse RISC family), while pretty much leaving Alpha to slowly rot.
In the end, HP transferred the Alpha team to Intel, some went there, others just quit and found jobs elsewhere.

Lenovo is Chinese as has been said, and they are nowhere near as big as IBM, if anything IBM could buy them if they felt like it.
Lenovo has ~20.000 employees.
IBM has ~320.000 employees.

Intel's x86 marketshare will increase slightly less than Apple's marketshare, say in the high 2's, too lazy to do the math.
