Where's the AM3? And if it was an AM3 CPU wouldn't it be a 925 instead of a 920?

edit: thanks for changing the title.

No apoligies needed, I'm just grumpy because I really am looking forward to a good AM3 review and I thought you found one. Feeling a bit pensive about it I guess.

Speaking of PhII 920's though...doesn't it seem odd to offer this SKU just a mere $30 lower than the BE 940? The 920 seems like a nearly pointless SKU at that price-point.

Who is going to buy a 920 and not bother paying another $30 to get a faster quad-core plus the unlocked multipliers? Especially for new builds where the $30 delta makes the difference between buying a $800 920-based system or $830 for a 940-based system. Is $30 really driving people's CPU selection when it comes to PhII?

Well PhII 940 is out of stock and the only available thing is the PhII 920. I was originally waiting for either the x3 720 or x4 925 but i read the review on donanimhaberin and gave the 920 a second taught..

I bought one for $180 shipped and it was worth every penny. If you know what your doing, a 940 and 920 will overclock the same.

Newegg has the 940 for $229 shipped.

But I could only get 3.7 out of mine, and its slower than my Q6600's@3.3 for F@H....

I am not impressed. If I was going now, I would get the Q9550 or the I7 920, depending on budget.

You're looking at only one piece of the pie mark. Your workload is 100% F@H... something AMD isn't at the top of the heap on. Look at all the reviews coming out - you'll see for all sorts of things the Phenom II is actually extremely competitive, and prices perfectly. Just take a look at AT's crossfire scaling results, and you'll see the PII does extremely well in gaming and encoding.

For people like me with an AM2+ motherboard, it's a no-brainer!

Yea, while not the fastest thing out there anymore, if you got in on a Q6600 early in it's life and an 8800GTX early on, you could still be quite happy with your 'old' hardware.

The flip side of that is for people with a 775 board and a dual core that want to go quad, it's pretty much a no brainer for them as well... and unfortunately for AMD, there are probably a lot more 775 boards then AM2+ out in the wild.

Those overclocked power consumption numbers are staggering! Look at the Q6600 compared to the 45nm Intel chips! 80W difference at load and 70 difference at idle. Holy smokes. Let's say I split the difference and use 75W, and a user leaves the computer on 24/7 with it being under a load half the time. Running the Q6600 rig for in an area where electricity costs 12 cents/kwh would cost the user an extra $6 per month! For one year would be an extra $77! At these extra costs, it would definitely be a smarter move for the overclocker, who would probably keep the chip between 1-2 years, to invest in a Q9550 or Q9400.

Exactly....

I am hoping to get my hands on a yorkfield soon that is capable of 4ghz....I dont need a platform switch to AMD or i7

If you have an AM2+ motherboard, and currently have an X2 processor installed, you just remove the X2 and drop in the Phenom II. It's an easy - and relatively inexpensive - upgrade.
