AMD Admits Delays of 45nm Products

Advanced Micro Devices on Friday admitted that it would only begin shipments of products made using 45nm process technology in the fourth quarter of the year. This is a delay from the original schedule to start ?volume? production by mid-2008, besides it also means that AMD will have uneasy times delivering better products to the market in Q2 and Q3, 2008.

I think Anton messed up...he even says "This is a delay from the original schedule to start ?volume? production by mid-2008".

Starting volume production in mid 2008 means delivery in Q4 because it takes 3 months to produce a chip...

I don't think so.

I can't imagine a 12" wafer taking more than a day through fab, then testing and marking the good dies, air freight to Malasia or wherever for packaging. Two weeks top from bare wafer to finished CPU.

Perhaps you were referring to something else?

Viditor and jones377 are on the money. An 11ML device at 65nm node will take ~80days to make its way thru the fab, 70days if the fab is really under-loaded. But once it exits the fab it still has ~2weeks of test and packaging to meander thru.

So which part do you think he meant? The first sentence is the one that has me concerned.

The rest of those sentences (IMO) are just someone's attempt to extrapolate the consequences of AMD's comments (and as you noted they did a piss poor job with the math).

I hadn't been really following AMD's stated plans all that aggresively, you can call me "bit twice and now twice shy" when it comes to AMD's product plans, but I thought the volume ships were supposed to be hitting in Q3 (Sept'ish).

Or maybe I was just enthusiastically dreaming and convinced myself AMD was going to do that. I hate to read Dirk saying Q4 as in AMD speak that means "in Dec, at the absolute friggen best case scenario".
