How big an improvement should I expect from upgrade from the A64 3400+ (S754) to E6400?

My main usage is MS Office, web surfing and gaming and video encoding from camcorder to DVD

The E6400 at stock speeds of 2.13Ghz would probably be about 5% faster than the A64 3400+ @ 2.4Ghz in single threaded applications...and obviously much higher in applications that can take advantage of dual core.

Now, if you overclock...that E6400 can overclock like a banshee, and at even 3Ghz would smoke your 3400+.

*Edit*
Just caught your edit. You won't notice any difference in MS Office and browsing the net, and in games maybe 5-10% assuming you are running at CPU limited resolutions, such as 1024x768. In Quake 4 you'd probably get another 10-20% on top of that since it takes advantage of dual core.

In my experience not much difference on the whole. A few FPS here or there and some time shaved off mp3/video encoding and synthetic benchmarks show big gains. However, in average day to day use I don't see any difference between my A64 and C2D systems.

I bought the C2D for video encoding. DVD Shrink a movie in 11 min @ stock speed. Web browsing feels the same.
