A bud of mine was looking to build another machine. He owns an NF7 v2 and a Mobile Barton 2500 that will coast @ 2.3. He does a quite a bit of MPEG to DVD editing and we are pushing out Seti Packets trying to whip an old friend just for grins. He owns several machines as do I and he will not game on this new machine. He offered me the chip and board at a very reasonable price. I would really like to know if the new setup would do him any better then what he already owns running the A64 2800 at stock. I would also like to know if he clocked up the 2800 to a average or moderate rate would it be much better. I am inclined to think he should wait and use what he has.

Does anyone here have real world experience with an upgrade similar to this.

Thanks for your input

My friend went from a 2.5ghz barton to a 2800 and we both could notice an increase in performance even in general desktop use.

I'm in the same boat. I just got a great deal on an A64 2800+, but don't know if it would be worth the hassle to switch to it from a mobile Barton @ 2.2 ghz...

I did the switch myself a few months back and the only real difference were in games, the A64 makes game feel faster & smoother.

A little, and hyperthreading would help with the SETI race even more.

XP @ 2.2 and A64 @ 1.8 are very close in performance.
He might see a nice improvement due to the new instructions though.

I have the Intel Machines and 1 AMD Machine. My friend went nuts with the NF7 V2 Machines and a mix of Bartons and Mobiles. I am smoking him in Seti no doubt. A friend of his gave him a couple of boards and a XP 2800 Barton. My 2800 Barton runs 400FSB so we are going to try his any day now.

So far it looks like little bang for the buck UNLESS he could get a good overclock on the A64 2800.

keep us updated!

I'm really interested in seeing the Seti output of the A64 vs. AthlonXP's, as that should give me an idea of what to expect as far as Lifemapper WU's go

I ran SETI classic on both a Barton@2.43ghz 422DC-DDR and a A64@2.4ghz and the times weren't far apart on average. Unless SETI has included optimizations I didn't have when I ran classic there isn't much to choose between. A P4HT 3.4ghz+ running 2 instances will dust both of them over a month of crunching from what I have seen.

A64 ~ AXP (barton)/1.25

Your AXP @ 2300/1.25 = 1845 Mhz A64 = a little faster than the stock 2800 which runs at 1800 mhz. However if you OC the 2800 to 2500 Mhz which IMO is trivial this will be a 3125 Mhz AXP equiv. Read Impossible. Worth it? I dunno. There are some intagibles with A64 like smooth enviroment and lauching of progams which just seems instant and effortless compared to AXP at any speed. Prolly due to on-board mem controller and much more refined core.

But SETI and encoding... sounds like a northwood is better choice IMO.

I agree my P4's will do better than my friend. He has everything on hand to put this Barton online. I have been hearing that the A64 seems smoother and quicker. I guess if it was say 20 or 25 percent quicker at doing the tasks my friend is doing it would be worth it.

Bob at the moment is running
2-2500 Barton mobiles @2300
1-2800 Barton @ 2300 I think when he switches motherboards to the Asus NF7 V2 he may be able to go much faster my 2800 Barton did 400FSB

I think he should bide his time until prices drop I do computer builds and repairing out of my house I may have to grab one and give him an exact head to head replacement
