As soon as it appeared evident that AMD would start manufacturing its new CPUs with 0.13 micron technology in 2002, the question rose: what production lines will the company use for it? It?s not a secret that AMD now had two fabs: one in Dresden and one in Austin, working with 0.18 micron manufacturing technology only (Dresden ? copper interconnect, Austin ? aluminum interconnect).
However, now the situation is more or less clear. AMD is already equipping their Dresden fab with all necessary things for 0.13micron manufacturing using SOI (silicon-on-insulator). The equipment is supposedly purchased from IBM Company. The new line will manufacture the first new CPUs in Q4 2001 already. These will be Thoroughbred (0.13micron Palomino), which are expected to become a mass product in Q1 2002. That?s why we wouldn?t say that the competition between Intel and AMD may lose its tension during the coming two years. Things should be really fine at that time. If you are looking for more details on AMD?s plans for the nearest future, then check the 14-18 November news.

competition, you gotta love it. the more competition, the better for us. the war is not gonna be over any time soon between intel and amd, for it's just the tip of the ice-berg we are seeing right now.

i know that AMD is becoming the prefered chip among the technology "haves" (that's anybody with a clue on what happens inside your computer) but the "have nots" still see intel and remember that stupid intel dong. They think they get a better machine with intel when they are comparable either way, and cheaper with AMD. AMD is just starting to get space in the retail stores and is realy hitting intel where it hurts, in the pocket book. I would hate to be an exec at intel trying to figure out how to save face, course i'd hate to be at AMD trying to figure out how to keep up the pressure against a company that still can throw much more money around. I hope AMD and Intel both keep this up and one doesn't kill the other off. I'd love it if a third company came in to balance it all even better too.
