Other than the obvious, is there another significant difference. The 140W received a 1x Customer Choice award at Newegg, and it is $10 cheaper than the 125W.

My naive newbie experience tells me that the 125W would be more energy efficient.

Thanks in advance.

the 125w is the better chip, and is an update/re-spin to the 140w part, the 140w part is cheaper because they are trying to clear out the old inventory.

Get the 125w version as it has the TLB error fix and it runs cooler then the 140w version so it will overclocker higher!!

Actually all of the AMD quads that end with "50" have the TLB fix.

I've heard that in reality both of chips consume about same power under full load, which is close to 125w.

I know this but he isnt asking about the others he is asking between the 125w and the 140w version..
The older model 9950 with the 140w just has the thing that give the phenoms the TLB turned off.
The new 125w doesnt even have the transistor on it to give it the TLB error.
Hence the 125w is the version to get..

Where in the world did you get this idea?

There is no difference in the TLB fix between the 140w and 125w versions of the chip.

So it's now June, and I haven't been keeping up with the latest AMD offerings. Has AMD released a processor which surpasses the 125W 9950?

Thanks!

Alot the Phenom ll. The X3 Phenom ll "tripple core" AM3/AM2+, and the Phenom 940 X4 AM2+, and the Phenom 945 and 955 X4.

The Phenom x3, 945,955 are all AM3 cpu's meaning DDR3 but they also have DDR2 memory controllers so they work in AM2+ boards also.

The Phenom 940 is AM2+ only but they are the same cpu's just the other have DDR3 memory controllers and DDR2, and the 940 just has DDR2. They are alot better then the 9950's have tripple the cache.

Even the tripple core are better then that 9950, whatever you do get the phenom's that are Phenom ll and not the older ones.

This. Do not buy the older Phenoms they are a terrible waste of money, but get the newer Phenom 2's which are better in about every way- I've had both. For budget users the X3 720 BE is a great buy and with a little more you can get an X4 940.
