I'm just plain confused. And I'm laughing. Could be that I'm tired. Could be that my AMD 955 be is now only showing 3 active cores and is labeling itself as a 775 BE, a chip AMD never made... Not quite sure what going on here and would love to have some insight as to how this came to be. THanks!

No idea, I'd try resetting BIOS to defaults, and see if it fixes itself. If not, sounds like it is broken...

If you're not sure how to do that, go to your motherboard and remove the watch battery and then put it/ a new one back in.

No need for that, there should be a jumper to move on the motherboard to reset cmos

If it's not mentioned in the motherboard manual, it probably doesn't apply to your mobo.

Wow I wonder if it's a dead core. I've never seen a CPU survive degradation before. This could be a scientific marvel! Send it to AMD for analysis! :D

well that is my thoughts a core died!?!?!?!?
but the change of the cpu is a bit confusing
how the mobo takes the name of the cpu???
counts the cores of the cpu??? that will explain the strange naming of the cpu
to a non existant one

I don't think AMD's hardware is smart enough to tell when a core dies. It has always been based on the CPU being told which cores are to be active.

Maybe your BIOS got corrupted? I would suggest going online to check for a BIOS update, and flash the BIOS update. I think the names for the CPU are kept in there, and the motherboard will try to pick the right name from that.

So, although your motherboard could be faulty and the BIOS is fine, it's just so much easier to install/flash new BIOS. Try that, and if you still have the problem, then you can take further steps to diagnose if it's a hardware fault in the motherboard and/or CPU.

Maybe a friend or sibling swapped out your CPU for a cheap Chinese knock off? Lol
