I picked up a pair of AMD boards from a friend tonight and both of them were modded (by said friend) with aftermarket coolers, necessitating the need to remove the stock AMD retention bracket. I bought them without the HSFs, so my plan was to use each with its stock setup.

I have two stock AMD coolers to use with each, but I did not get the two screws needed to hold down the retention bracket to the plate underneath the board itself.

Does anyone know where to pick up a few or what size screws I am looking for ? Keep in mind I HAVE the retention bracket, I just need the screws (4 total) for each of the two boards.

I checked a Biostar skt 939 board's bracket, can't be 100% sure all 939 brackets are the same but from what I recall it looks normal to me. It's screws are 6-32 thread, 1" long. Fortunately this thread pitch is the same as the most common screws in a computer case so you could just take a screw off the PSU rear mounting points or a hard drive, etc, and see if that threads smoothly into the bracket to confirm it is the right size. I doubt it would be a larger screw than this, but possibly the smaller 4-32 pitch instead as used on floppy drives, optical drives.

As for where to find them, it's a very common size if that's what you need. 4-32 slightly less common in 1" length but probably still common enough, you can get more than 4 for about $1 at any reasonably stocked hardware store. Next cheapest is probably someone on ebay, otherwise web store shipping will cost a lot more than the screws would.

Thanks, mindless ! I actually had two screws in the box with the hardware accessories, and judging by their length, they are the aftermarket ones for the HSF. They are about 1/4" too long compared to the stock screws (I pulled one out of a stock 939 board I managed to scrounge up out of the parts box). The aftermarket HSF that he used was a Tt Blue Orb II, and its so huge that it covers BOTH the RAM sockets AND the AGP slot, so there is no way I could even use that even if I wanted to for the build.

I'll try the local hardware store with my stock screw for reference, and take along the backing plate to test the fit.

My prior reply had an error, the smaller screws used with optical drives and floppies is 4-40, not 4-32.
