AMD 870 vs 880G Chipset?

Just got my X6 and looking to get a board in the $110 area. The two chipsets that work out are the 870 and 880g (would prefer to stick to 800 series for USB3.0 and Sata3). Both will run an X6 natively which I need as well.

The two boards I'm considering now are the MSI 870a-G54 (or the Gigabyte 870 but noone knows the release date on it) and the ASRock 880G Extreme3.

I don't really need onboard video or Crossfire. Is there any other real difference between the two chipsets? Overclocking? That and I'm a bit weary about going for ASRock.

Can't see the Newegg links as the redirect gets filtered and blocked so not sure what boards were linked.

Onboard is nice to have but not worth it for $20-30+ more than the 870 (as I already have a PCI backup as well). 880G is running around $130 for non-micro if I don't count the ASRock. The MSI 870 will be $90 for me. But I'm still not so sold on the ASRock even though they are getting good reviews lately.

Just need a more 'basic' board that will net me a decent OC (hoping to hit maybe 3.6 or a bit more on my 1055T).

Oh yeah I saw that too but the 880G is the same price as the 870. I figured if I go for the ASRock, why not go for the 880G instead. Both are $110 currenty on newegg.

My issue is I'm a bit unsure of ASRock. They used to have many mixed reviews and still do nowadays (although the boards themselves are getting good reviews from websites).

If I go for an 870, I would probably pick up the MSI (will cost me $90 too). 3 year warranty vs 1 year on the ASRock as well. 880G would be ASRock.

Mant times the onboard video can hold back overclocks. I know that was the case in older boards so may not be as true today. That and some onboard video boards have less settings in the BIOS. Again may not be true for asrock or others.

Ah I see. I guess the 880G is more the 'HTCP' line out there. I'll probably head with the 870. I would prefer the ASUS 870 but the boards only have a 4pin AUX instead of the 8pin the others have.

I really wanted the Gigabyte 870 but there is no ETA when Newegg is getting them.

This is a pretty easy question. The 9600 was a great card when it came out, but that was many many years ago. The HD 3200 is the new tech for ATi and has many options that the 9600 does not have. Also the 3200 will be supported for a few more years, where the 9600 is coming close to the end (look at games and the graphic requirements, the 9600 is only supported on a few games).

If you are going to buy, I would recommend the 3200 over the 9600. With that in mind, if you can afford it, I would go with a higher HD such as teh 3850 or 3870.

I don't need Onboard Graphics, but decided on the Mobo in my Sig simply because of the reasonable Price and for the security of knowing that if my Vidcard bites it I still will have a backup for Video. Don't plan on using Crossfire either, but again I have that option if I change my mind or might pick up the cheapest Nvidia vidcard capable of running PhysX competently and hack it.

The 890GX boards are top-notch overclockers. The Asus one is one of the best overclockers out there. You're only talking about $25-30 more.

Yeah I just saw the board added last night. What's odd though is Gigabyte pulled it from the X6 compatible list also. It is supported but now unsure if it's via BIOS update or natively - although it should be natively.

I sent them an email last night just to make sure as I don't have a chip to flash the BIOS if that's the case.

But the board looks really nice, especially for a $105 pricetag.

Edit: I called Gigabyte CS today to make sure that the board supports a 1055T out of the box. The Rep put me on hold and said he went to test the 870 with a 1055T and he told me it posts with no issues.

Now I got an Email from Gigabyte saying:

'Dear customer,
Board need bios update for X6 processor support, now board is under AMD'X6 processor validation. Once it passed validation bios support will post on web.'

Thinking of just refusing shipment on the board and then just picking up another board.
